I'm planning a weekend break to Amsterdam in December and I'm looking for a hotel that isn't too expensive (we're both in our first year at work!) - probably about 120 a night for a double, but that is a little bit different or romantic. It's our first weekend away together so I want it to be special.

Any suggestions?

It is a little more expensive than your limit (we paid Euro 170, but could have had a room for cheaper), but we just came back from Amsterdam and stayed at The Canal House (or Het Canal House) on Keizersgracht, and it was amazing. We had a room overlooking the garden that had really high ceilings, and was filled with antiques and paintings, and was incredibly romantic, even more so because there are not televisions in the room. The sheets were crisp, and the owners most pleasant and friendly. All hotel staff speak English.

We also stayed at the Canal HOuse last year and loved it. Wonderful location (aronund the corner from Anne Frank House), great breakfast and lovely hotel. I know we paid more than $120.00. Check them out on line. You won't be disappointed.

The Ambassade, but it may be over your budget.

The Seven Bridges Hotel in the canal ring district is certainly within your budget. The seven bridges view just outside (where 2 canals intersect) is one of the most romantic spots in the city (especially at night). In fact, anytime we were in our room looking outside there was always a couple sitting on the bench, admiring the view, and/or smooching. Very freindly staff. Ask for a room w/ a view.

Seconding the Ambassade. Superb staff, every room unique, great location. Some rooms are not totally reachable via elevator - you must climb a small spiral (romantic!) staircase for the last part. This is a property made up of seven or eight old canal houses renovated and joined together, so there are all kinds of nooks and crannies.

Also, the B&B called 't Hotel (short for Het Hotel, or "the Hotel&quot might be suitable for you. It's on a very small canal, the Leliegracht. You'd never guess you're so close to downtown by the peace and quiet on this street. Try to get the front room with its canal view, although the back rooms with their view of the garden are nice too. 't Hotel would run you about 140 Euro a night, breakfast included. Be warned: no elevator and STEEP stairs! Worth it, though - I loved this little place.

You might want to check out Haarlem for accomodations also.
