The problem I have with Hotel du Commerce and Hotel des Allies are the mentions of bedbugs in the reviews. Any savings would be wiped out if you brought them home. Admittedly, any hotel can get bedbugs at any time but I don't think I'd be at peace with those choices.

I would consider the hostels TravelNut posted. New buildings are always nice, and St. Christopher's typically includes a good social scene.

Hello,

Actually funny that you mention the bed bugs... I was thinking about the same thing last nite; I even tried to see if there was anything I could spray on the beds when I got there

I looked at St-Christophers when I first started doing research, but then I read that the area wasn't too good at nite... is that wrong, is it an okay area?

Thank you!

Well, what do they say to do when you stay in youth hostels? Don't they tell you to bring a sleep sac and spray it with deet or something?

Hello,

Well, we're bringing a sheet sac already just in case that we run into dirty bedding... I am not sure if spraying something like that would save me from the buggers though... the thing is that this is such a gamble, as WillTravel mentioned there cold be bed bugs even at higher priced hotels, and a number of reviews of the Du Commerce are satisfied people that actually found the hotel clean, even one of the posters aimeekm... you just never know.

I checked the OOps, they have beds avail for 30E, I guess I could spring the extra 5E per night, the reviews are ok, a few complaints about the cleanliness but they're fairly new so maybe it won't be that bad. As far as the area, the 13th... is it ok?

Londonres, thank you for the link.

Thank you very much for your continued help!

I don't know anything more about Hotel du Commerce than the reviews on tripadvisor. Regardless of niceness of hotel or amenities, I don't think there is any excuse for filth -- you can always keep something clean. So one review talked about how dirty things were, like the common bathrooms, and that there were even bugs in the room smashed into the wall. Someone said you couldn't open the windows, they were stuck, so of course it might stink (one nice thing about when it isn't so hot is that you can open the windows and air things out and get fresh air). Someone else said they didn't get the type of bed they had confirmed (double instead of twins, and since you are traveling with your sister, that could affect you if it happened).

things like that, but some reviews liked it okay, so there you go. It may be no worse than some hostel, of course.

St Christopher's hostel is real far out, I don't think you'd want to stay there.

I think it's a very good location, nothing wrong with it. I like the area around the Gobelins metro stop, and have stayed right near there and loved it. I will admit I was just over the border in the 5th, not the opposite way, but it will be fine and is just a block or two way from the bd St Marcel intersection. That's about right across from the Gobelins tapestry factory and not far from the metro stop. There are also good buses running on the major streets around there (I often take the 91 running on bd Port Royal and then over to the Bastille), and lots of good cafes and stores (there are a couple open air markets a few days a week also, one on bd Auguste Blanqui). Also, it's only a few blocks from rue Mouffetard, a good place for shopping, cheap food, and bars/cafes where lots of young people hang out.

IMO this location is far superior to Les Halles.
