Brienz

Years ago my mother-in-law bought some really nice wood carvings in Brientz. Does anyone know if they are still sold there or are these common throughout Switzerland?

Yes they are, Brienz is the centre of the wood carving industry in Switzerland. I can reccommend a shop in Interlaken where most of the stock is carved by the couple who own the shop Woodpecker in I think it is Marktgasse, down the side of the post office just before the level crossing.

There are a number of wood carving workshops along the main street in Brienz selling all sorts of wood carvings, you can even watch them being carved. During the summer months, wood carvers work along the promenade in Brienz also.

Hi Sue, I purchased some lovely carvings at the Huggler shop. There were several stores and workshops. I also got lucky and was there during a woodcarving exhibition with carvers from around the world. As mentioned above, they were along the lake promenade. I can't find the website I used for researching Brienz, but I found this one that had some information about woodcarving in Brienz:

The wood carvers are still there like the others said. We bought some nice carvings there 2 years ago. I think you will enjoy browsing the shops.
