We like the B&B Miramonte, which is in the university section of the old town, thus maybe too far from the train station but 10 minutes walking from the main piazza.

Did you use Venere to make the reservation, Michael?

We stayed at Casa Ilaria in Bologna and really liked it. It's an apartment that has 2 bedrooms. U can rent just 1 bedroom.
The owner, Ilaria, lives upstairs in the building. We walked with rolling suitcase to and from the train station -- maybe about 20 minutes walk. It's located in the student area. Last year we paid about 110 euros

Sofitel is across the street. Ask for a back room to avoid street sounds. Very convenient to busses also. Not certain if the price is what you want as it's been a couple of years since we were there.

Hotel Paradise seems to get recommended a lot here. We stayed at Hotel Il Canale (we needed a triple) on the same street; Il Canale is nice with a very good breakfast but may be slightly more expensive. The area is about a 15 min walk from the train station down via Indipendenza and less than 5 minutes to Piazza Maggiore. It is down a side street, but I think I would feel safe. Around the corner is Trattoria Biasannet, which we really enjoyed and which some other Fodorites have praised.

I believe that I made the reservations directly. Somewhere on the net there is a complete list of B&Bs in Bologna with contact information. But if you google "B&B Miramonte, Bologna" you shold be able to get to its web site. The owner speaks fluent English.
