Photos aren't allowed in the Joanina library anymore.
I booked through Go Walks but it ended up being contracted out to someone through Trip Advisor. It was okay but not special and at close to $40pp, not really worth it. I would go through the university and see about their availability.

I saw it back in 2004, when you could still take photos, without flash (although mine didn't turn out very well). I didn't have a tour guide, and didn't feel a need for one. (That is true for me a lot of the time, I would rather read up on whatever it is, and then go see it at my own pace.)

I'd do it without a tour next time - the tour was not worth it. We were in with lots of other people so it didn't really have a big advantage. The Library visit is time limited whether or not your on a tour. We got a little bit more explanation the different buildings and rooms but it didn't give us an advantage in seeing anything unique.

On my 2017 visit, I simply went through with an on-site guide (at least then you couldn't go in on your own); I made no prior arrangement, but simply bought a ticket at the university that very day, and appeared at the library doorway at the start of one of the tours. But note that this was mid-December, definitely not high tourist season.
