We are staying in Positano and then we would like to rent a car to drive to Tuscany and after 3 days in Tuscany probably return the car in Florence. It has been recommended to me to rent the car in either Salerno or Sorrento. Any advice now to help me pick which one. Which one is easier to get to from Positano and would offer a good beginning point for our drive to Tuscany.

Also, could anyone offer a guess as to what hour to rent the car if we have to first arrive there from Positano in the morning. (Keep in mind we are not the earliest of risers

Well Sorrento is more in the correct direction. But you need to find out which agencies have offices where, what prices they're offering and what hours they're open. How long it will take to get from Positano to either one will depend on the time of year (and how much traffic the bus runs into).

Rent the car in Sorrento if you are headed to Tuscany. We stayed in Positano and rented a car from the Hertz in Sorrento. They had the best prices at the time. It would be out of the way to go to Salerno just to rent a car when you can do that in Sorrento.

Since you admit you're not early risers, I'd train from Sorrento-Naples-Chiusi in time to rent the car in Chiusi (if you're still planning on staying in Montepulciano) or all the way to Florence (if you were planning to see Florence). The drive from Sorrento to Montepulciano is 4.5-5 hours (not counting any stops).

I think we will end up renting a car in Sorrento. True we are not early risers but it sounds like it is worth the effort to get to Tuscany.
Now I am considering cutting short our stay in Positano to 3-4 nights and staying 2-3 nights in Sorrento also. I have heard mixed reviews on Sorrento. It seems that some love it and many say to just skip it. Any opinions???

I like Sorrento. The next poster will say he/she didn't. Whether it's advisable to spend a few nights in Sorrento depends on what you plan to do while you're there. Will you have already been to Pompeii? Naples?

Staying in Sorrento would make the day you leave for Tuscany one step easier, but I don't understand why you think driving to Tuscany is more "worth the effort" than taking the train and renting the car when you get closer to your destination. Do you like driving? Were you planning to make some stops along the way?
