As part of our Dec/Jan Italy trip, my husband and I are planning on spending 3 days in the Sorrento/Positano area. I've spent the last week looking on tripadvisor/venere for hotels. Since Jan is the most inclement weather month, and we won't have a car, I'd like to stay close to town and someplace that has more facilities than a B&B. We really don't want to spend more than $250US per nignt, but will if it's REALLY worth it. I had settled on Il Nido, but can't seem to get hold of them. Does anyone have an knowledge of Hotel Palazzo Guardati (no reviews that I can find-they may be very new)??? Or other suggestions ???

I would recommend Ravello - 1 Euro bus to Amalfi. Thought Ravello far superior to Amalfi and Positano in mid May.

Hi Diana - If you want to be in a town with more facilities your best choice in winter is really Sorrento IMO.

I beg to disagree with Mike - personally I don't think Ravello would be a great choice without a car in January.

Diana, I would also think Sorrento would be the best base. Trains to the surrounding areas give you accessibility without a car.

We stayed at Villa di Sorrento in Nov. 05, a double was 90 euros. I remember it was a reduced rate I found through a hotel booking site. You should be able to contact them at www.villadisorrento.it

We enjoyed our stay in Sorrento during the off season. The presense of children going to school on the train, families walking around in the evening gave us a sense of everyday life in Italy.

The hotel was an easy walk from the train station and our stay was very comfortable. We talked to one woman who comes there every year for a month, lucky her Deborah

Since you will be there in Dec/Jan, I suggest that you stay in Sorrento.

It will give you many more options during inclement weather.

Exactly- since Sorrento is a larger town and less dependent o tourisn you're likely to find more hotels and restaurants open that in the small villages further down the coast. And - you can easily take the train to Pompeii or the Museum in Naples if the water is too rough to be able to get to Capri.

YEs, we did Pompei on our last trip, but want to do the museum in Naples and see the scenic coast, Positano etc. I'm trying to finalize hotels now. We want something with ambiance, great beds, a balcony with a view, and central location. I've emailed Il Nido 3x and haven't gotten a response. Suggestions ????

Had a car there in May, but no place to park in Sorrento/Positano - hence used the bus and ferries.

I agree with the Sorrento recommendations. You might look at Hotel Bristol and Hotel Mediterreo, both of which should be within your budget.
