Best option for travel from Pisa to Florence
We will be arriving at Pisa airport mid-morning. I assume our choices of transportation are bus, train or rental car. Bearing in mind we will have our luggage to deal with, what is the best option? If we choose the bus or train how do we determine which to take and how do we get there from the airport? We will be staying in the Florence area for 2 weeks and would like to take day trips and/or overnight trips into Tuscany after the first 3 days. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Thank you everyone.

or you can take a bus...

70min - 7 Euros.
It essentially services ryanair flights which are advertised as Pisa (Florence). You can buy tickets at the airport, no need to purchase online. The website will give you depature times. I used this service and it was very quick and efficient.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable. Table 613 shows that trains headed for Florence leave Pisa airport at 0641 daily, 1042 daily, 1143 (not Sundays), and 1243 (not Sundays), for a trip of 90 minutes. Local trains and busses leave the airport twice or thrice an hour every day, and take five minutes to Pisa Central railway station. Trains leave Pisa Central at 0854, 0933, 1029 (not Sundays), 1101 (this starts at the airport), 1129, 1154 (this starts at the airport), and so on: they take 90 minutes to Florence.

I have never taken the train from Pisa to Florence. However, last April I arrived at the Florence airport and took the train to Lucca. There was absolutely no place to put the luggage - my husband and I each had one carry-one and one large rolling bag. So, my tired and jet lagged husband stood with the luggage in a space between the cars. I think the bus would have been a better choice for us and suggest it to you.

Hi!
I just took the train from Florence to Pisa, and will take it in the other direction tomorrow.
The train station is exactly outside of the Pisa terminal doors. You buy your tickets INSIDE the station. It is very well marked once you leave the baggage claim area. It leaves approximately every hour, and costs PEANUTS.
Another option is by bus that will take you to the train station in Florence (where the train will arrive
) You will see a HUGE desk right when you exit the baggage claim area. This bus leaves also every hour and costs a bit more.
Luggage will be no problem with either option -- just get a first class train ticket and go to the first class car. It really doesn't look like first class, BUT there are fewer people and you can hoist your luggage onto the train and leave it where you like with this option. For the extra dollar-fifty, I think it is worth it. With the bus, you will load your luggage yourself underneath the bus. Both options will take you to the main train station in Florence, where there is a taxi stand waiting to take you to the hotel.
Personally, I would wait on renting the car. You can rent one from the centre of town when you get there. This will avoid the problems that you WILL have trying to drive into the city if you rent from the airport. Firenze has a traffic-restricted centre, and they photograph and heavily fine all those entering the city without permission. You can avoid this by renting from within the city centre.
Just some thoughts!

Thanks everyone, for the advice. We were originally leaning towards a rental car, but now have eliminated that option altogether. We're leaving Monday and have learned so much from this website. We now have to narrow down all the great sounding choices to a select few. Thanks again for all your help.
