FLORENCE TO PISA
Hello again Fodorites!!
I am planning yet another trip to Italy. In the past, this site has helped a great deal.
I am now starting to spread my wings and flying in and out of cities and not necessarily planning to stay in the cities that I fly into or out of.
I will start by saying that my FF miles are with America.
I plan to spend the first week of April in Florence. I have found that it is more convenient to fly into Milan or Pisa(which is also incredibly cheaper) this time of year and out of Pisa.
My questions are:
1. If I take the train in Florence at 0700 for Pisa, and then to Pisa airport for a 1315 flight to LHR, do you think this is a reasonable amount of time to get to the airport??
2. What are your experiences of flying Brithsh Airways v.s. American Airlines from US to Heathrow or Milan
3. For connecting flight in LHR, how much time should one allow between flights?
Some of the connection times at LHR are scary i.e only l.5 hours between flights
Thanks for your suggestions

It has been a few years (09) since I traveled that route Pisa to Florence. I took the slow train. The one that stops at almost every stop along the way and I think it took an hour. I'm pretty sure there is a train station under the airport in Pisa, so it wouldn't take very long to get to your flight check-in after getting off the train.
To answer your question even if you took the slow train which was maybe 7 Euro I would give yourself three hours total for travel and check-in time at the airport.

There are direct trains from Florence (Firenze) to Pisa Airport that take 1 hour 15 minutes and may or may not require a change of train at Pisa Centrale to reach the airport. The train stops right outside the relatively small airport terminal.
The current weekday schedule has a 7:00AM train that goes directly from Firenze SMN to Pisa Aeroporto in exactly 1 hour. Pisa Airport is quite small--arriving three hours early for a flight from there is overkill. Did you mean that you wanted to stop and see the tower before your flight?

The 7am departure from Florence gets you to Pisa airport at 8am.
That's way too early for a 13:15 flights - over 5 hrs.
Pisa airport is small and easy to navigate. Personally I would not take anything that gets me to the airport earlier than 11:30.

Thanks all for the answers.
It's looking like I will fly into Pisa(land around 0830), train to Florence.
Then train from Florence to Pisa, leaving early enough to see the leaning tower and then to airport.
Thanks again
