Best Base in Saltzburg Area??

We are going to the Salzburg area in June for 3 nights. Is it best to stay in Salzburg and go to St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang and Bad Ischl as day trips or is it possible to stay in St. Gilgen ,St. Wolfgang or another pretty area and do Salzburg as a day trip. We will have a car. Are these places so close it doesn't matter? Hard to tell on a map. Thanks

St. Gilgen is a 40 minute bus ride from Salzburg so car would be even shorter. Bad Ischl was an just under an hour from St. Gilgen by bus.

We took a ferry from St. Gilgen to St. Wolfgang which was delightful!

I would not change hotels but would base in the one place that most appeals and go from there with only 3 nights.

You can easily stay in St. Gilgen and visit Salzburg from there. About a 30 minute drive.

We stayed in Salzburg and visited around. We went to St Gilgen and St.Wolfgang for a visit. I would recommend staying in Salzburg.

We enjoyed staying in St. Gilgen and adding Hallstatt to the mix. The entire region is terrific.
