By all means, right in the heart of West Berlin - along with three other top hotels nearby and very close to the Zoo S-Bahn/train station. Excellent location!

Well, it is a bland side street near Kurfuerstendamm. The Interconti is on the other side of the street, apart from that not particularly nice surroundings. Not a bad neighbourhood either. Center of West Berlin, as PalQ pointed out, but not my favorite location.

It is an excellent location in West Berlin. You are very close to the Gedächtniskirche, the Kudamm, the KaDeWe. And you are close to Bahnhof Zoo which means you are within minutes everywhere else in the city.
The Sofitel is a bright modern hotel with a nice indoor pool. On the other side of the street, there is the Intercontinental which hosts one of Berlin's most interesting bars (go there after 11 p.m.).

While Sofitel has an OK location, it wouldn't be my first choice. It's not that close to those attractions and the immediate area is not as pedestrian friendly. If you have a choice, I would recommend checking the Swissotel which is really in the heart of West Berlin, right on Ku'damm and across the street from the Gedaechtniskirche(Memorial church) and a much better area to stroll to the nearby Kadewe.

I like both East & West Berlin, they almost feel like two different cities, but as Kevin wrote, the east side is a lot more interesting in terms of tourism. Actually I like Potsdamerplatz for its central location btw east & west.

I am staying about two blocks from there right now. It is quite conveninet if you are on public transport - close to Zoo station - but agree with others who have said that East Berlin is now the happening place to be. It's not an awful location, the area has been pretty much cleaned up of the seedier elements (not quite as Disneyfied as Times Square, there is till some character) and if your primary interest is shopping you are close to KaDaWe.
