Hotel Colon, right across from the Cathedral which is lit up beautifully at night. Has an outdoor cafe for taking in the view. In great old section of town, surrounded by restaurants, and close to Ramblas.

I just returned a few days ago from a trip to Spain.

We stayed at Hotel Rialto, (Ferran 40-42, phone # 34 93 318 52 12). It too was within a few minutes walk from the Cathedral and less than 2 blocks from La Rambla. The price was right and the rooms larger than most with a good size bathroom.

Our Spainish tour guide mentioned that a new hotel on the waterfront called Artes was "the place" if you were ever looking for a 5-star.

I also stayed at the Hotel Colon. Of course the rooms with views of the cathedral are the best, but no matter which part of the hotel you stay you'll have a nice view (I think the side streets with the colorful window shutters are just as gorgeous). The rooms are clean and well decorated and the staff was very helpful. I highly recommend it.

I also stayed and and loved the Colon. Very helpful staff and large rooms. As to nightlife --- although I was not myself a participant, I saw many clubs in the old section of Barcelona, right near the Colon.

M

I've stayed at the Gran Via many times and love it. Very convenient, safe, nice breakfast, and reasonable price.
