Athens hotels
Hello savvy travelers out there,
I arrive in Athens on May 19th (one day before their next strike on the 20th). Taking another father-son trip with my dad and he's in his late 70's. Need a decent but not too expensive (LT 90 Euros) hotel or b&b in Kolonaki or Plaka if possible. Not sure if, given the environment, it would be better to get there and get a cheaper rate or try to get a reservation at a possibly higher rate before I leave the US. Negotiate and get a cheaper rate, or guarantee at a higher rate - that is the question... Only be in the area for 4 days.
I need your advice on some ideas - or possibly some clean hotels that will allow us to walk whereever we want to go - given that transit may be affected.
Thanks so very much in advance - a quick reply would be most appreciated since departure is two days away.
type to you later....

Hi
Maybe try the Hotel Carolina - http://www.hotelcarolina.gr. I haven't stayed there but the location is good and bang on budget.

OP-
do a search, there have been many recomendations for hotels in your price range.
my next trip to Athens (within 6 mos?), I will give serious consideration to Amazon hotel on northern edge of Plaka.
Not strictly *inside* Plaka, its main entrance is on Mitropoleos Street. Seems a clean and modern hotel.
Might be slightly above your price range.

I have vacationed in Greece and fly to Athens quite a bit for work as I work for the airlines. If you want a great hotel that is reasonable and in a great location, then book with the Hotel Attalos in Athens. It is highly regarded on Tripadvisor and this forum. The price is wonderful as it is a 3 star hotel located just down from the exit of Monostraki(sp?). You literally can take the metro from the Athens airport and go straight to that stop-walk about 500 yards and you are at the hotel.
The hotel has free internet, decent neighborhood for coffee and breakfast and is in the heart of the Plaka. The rooftop is wonderful for a drink and an unbelievable view of the Acropolis. It has great deals for families(read triple rooms) along with doubles and singles. It is VERY popular due to price, location and what you get. If it is full, then consider the Hotel Cecil just a few yards from it.
I have stayed at the Athens Hilton and the Crowne Plaza and the Hotel Attalos is a wonderful deal for the money!

Hi again
Yep I agree with dutyfree. I have stayed at both the Attalos and Cecil Hotels. The Cecil is a beautiful neo classical building. Aviod the rooms on the street, they can be a little noisy if you're a light sleeper. The advantage of the Attalos is their beautiful rooftop terrace. Great views of the Acropolis at night. And their bar prices are reasonable. However both hotels are above OP's budget so staying there may not be an option.
