Hi all,

We are in Italy finally! And we have a quick question we need some help on. Since we are traveling with the baby and he keeps tiring out before the late dinner hour we are wanting to be able to ask at restaurants for carry out or take out. Its fine for my husband to go back out during the meal hour but we've been a little unsure whether this is done here and how to ask for it. We've figured out we can get pizza anytime and always pick up a sandwich for later, but we'd love to be able to sample some of the wonderful dinner cuisine even on the nights when the baby dictates we get him home and in bed earlier. So, 1) how do we ask for it--my italian dictionary I can't find the expression take out or carry out. 2) is there any types of restaurants that will be more prone to honor this request or are any just as likely to be able to accomodate.

the phrase you want is "per porta via".

of course pizza places will be top of the list, but there may well be a trattoria or tavola calda [hot table] that will help out, or, depending where you are, a place that has hot dishes that you can choose from like a buffet - there was one in the little place that I was staying in that had all sorts of things - which called itself a "rosticceria"

Ah thanks so much. That's perfect! Right now, we are in Gorizia, near the Slovenian border. It is so lovely here--a gem of a town!

Gorizia is a wonderful town! There area several nice restaurants there. I think you would have an easier time getting restaurants to let you "porta via" if you brought your own take-out containers.

Another suggestion: Why don't you go for lunch at these restaurants and then nibble at dinner?

Are you planning on going up to La Subida in Cormons? It's great -- and one of the members of the family who owns La Subida has a very small child.

PS: You know you can take a sleeping baby into an Italian restaurant, yes? Maybe you should try eating at 9.

I have asked for take out all over Italy and never had a problem.

Even if the Italians don't do a lot of restaurant take away, I've never been turned down, even for take out coffee.

We ate at La Subida 3 years ago on a trip to Friuli and
Slovenia. It was superb, fanatstic food, beautiful surroundings, and pleasant service.

This summer we are heading back to Friuli and are staying in one of the wooden houses at La Subida for 3 nights.
Looking forward to dining there each night of our stay.

We stayed over at La Subida and if you haven't done it already, you are in for a treat. Breakfast is wonderful, as you might guess.

Tiny correction: It's "portar (to carry) via" or "portare (to carry) via", not "porta (door) via".

Often you will be asked "Mangia subito?" meaning "For here?", to which you then reply in the negative: "Non, per portare via"

I know that many places are more familiar with "take away" rather than "take out."

As per zeppole, why not take the baby sleeping in his pushchair to dinner with you ? We have travelled in Italy with friends who did this.

Most pizzerias in Italy also make PIZZE D'ASPORTO which is to say you can ask to have your PIZZA made and you can take it away. It's PIZZA D'ASPORTO
