Vesuvius is nice on a clear day. You can see everything...even pompeii. It is, however, a little dissaponting. My husband was very upset when we got to the top...all he kept talking about was hiking all the way up to look in a big hole. Be sure to wear hiking shoes because you will slip and slide the whole way down. Do get a walking stick at the base...you will need it for balance.

I'm just curious - why was he disappointed? I'm trying to talk my husband into doing this with our kids so is there something bad about climbing it that I should know?

What would one expect to see at the top of a volcano, the cone of course, and I suppose a spectacular view of the surrounding area. What else would make the hike worthwhile--Disneyland rides?

Thankfully Vesuvio is resting and hopefully will remain so. An eruption would cause devastating destruction.

WE visited Pompeii and the Museo Archelogio in Naples in April. (Day trip from our place on Sorrento Penninsula). The museum is wonderful and has a great exhibit on Pompeii and Herculeum. We were glad we'd been to Pompeii first as it gave more meaning to the exhibit, and we did not feel the need to go to Herculeum afterward. So I guess if you can visit either place first, you'll enjoy the museum more. And the rest of the museum is great, too.

Caplanco,
That is exactly what I want to do. But I didn't know which to do first. It does make sense to go to Pompeii first.

Did you go "on your own" or did you hire a taxi or tour/guide?''

We will be on a cruise 700 to 1700 in Naples so we have abou 10 hours to work with.

I want to join the I Love Napoli club too! I will be there in August for 10 days and intend to explore everything in the area with great enthusiasm. I will be with some Italian friends who vacationed in Napoli every year as youngsters, so I am learning about a lot of interesting sites to see.
