They have at times, but it isn't usual and not done every year. They did them for the big millennium thing and some other time I think they were trying to get the Olympics, but usually no.
Don't you read the newspaper or get an entertainment guide or something? They often don't announce that until the last minute for some reason, but it should be in Pariscope.

Yes, we do buy and read Pariscope and other publications when we are there. Since we won't be there for five more days, I was just curious to see if anyone knew what was planned and if I could find out something while we are still here.

Normal year this year : no fireworks ! (they are absolutely not a tradition in Paris at this time of the year : over 60% of the nights are rainy, it's cold outside an 1 year out of 4 we even get a post solstice tempest at this time of the year : why shoot money in the wind for an atraction nobody will be able to see ?)

I thought since you mentioned no hotel staff to check with, you meant when you were there. I was going to say that you could always go to one of the Paris Tourist Office booths to see what's going on, they would know. I don't remember where you are staying, but there is a small one just in front of the Bastille Opera house.
They are planning a few events around the Trocadero, if you want something to do. They are having some bands there on the first, and here's a website with some info on some musical events around then or parade or something (didn't read it well):
