I stayed at Best Western Eden last year. It's near Rembrandtplein and on the Amstel. It's a nice enough hotel although the furnishing needs to be redone. Breakfast is good but not fantastic. We asked for quiet rooms because of the disco located in the same building which we received. Great bar but expensive restaurant. Fantastic Irish pub down the road with live music. It's located centrally, not too far from the flower market.
If the price is right, I would stay there again. Just make sure you get a quiet room away from the disco.

Also, I have tried to search for reviews on tripadvior.com and other sites. Does anyone know if the Amsterdam American Hotel is also know as the Crowne Plaza American?
I have trouble bringing up Amsterdam American Hotel and it directs me to the Crowne Plaza. Thanks again!

Do you have a map of Amsterdam?
I mention this only because "the best location" is different for different people. Personally I do not care for the central area around The Dam, train station, and RLD which many might consider the best. I like Vondelpark, Leidseplein, and the canal rings so much better (for example). Much more beautiful part of the city yet still very convenient for the sights.

I don't consider the "American Hotel" a budget option, considering the rack rates are in the 300-400€ range...!

A "budget" hotel would be more like Hotel Kap or Hotel de Munck, rooms for 90-110€...

You will love Amsterdam! We were there this June and liked it so much. If you click on my name above, you can find my trip report of London-Paris-Amsterdam, with specific recommendations for great restaurants in fantastic Amsterdam. Also, we liked our Hotel Residence le Coin for its central and fantastic location. It's directly across the street from two five-star hotels, so in a nice and safe neighborhood. Great prices, friendly people, option of breakfast in the a.m., next door to two great cafes...

Have you looked at www.bookings.org ? That seems to have good deals for Amsterdam.
