Elvis is a rock and roll singer from the 50's and 60's I like a few tunes of his and I know who he is! Is ABBA a rock and roll singer from Europe?

ABBA is a Swedish rock/pop group from the 1970s which used to dominate charts in America, too. They are probably still one of the best known bands of the world (and not only in Europe).

I am afraid you are on the collision course with some culture shock when you arrive here. Enjoy it!

Cool! There are still corners of the world untouched by globalisation. I was under the impression that meanwhile there is the same music on any radio station from Moscow to San Francisco!

I wouldn't call Abba a rock 'n roll group, for the same reason I wouldn't call Bob Dylan a folk singer.

I can understand - sort of - there being a genre called "country and western", but am I correct in assuming that there isn't any such a thing as a "country and western" song, i.e. one that falls into both the "country" and the "western" sub-genres? Why the "western" anyway? Wouldn't a western song be considered "country" by definition? Or is there also a city-and-western genre?

How hard will it be for Mr_Dreamer to find this music in Europe, assuming he doesn't take a laptop? If "very", this could be another excellent reason to travel there (in addition to not being able to find Folger's coffee, that is).

Mr. Dreamer,
Your question has been asked and answered to the extent that this horse is not only dead but decomposing. Ot One additional thought: something you WILL require is plenty of Euros. Abundant Euros. The poor sad US dollar is at a 20 month low. I was just in Paris for a month, and found prices to be stunning. Negatively stunning. So, pack what is familiar and comforting if you must, and know that you can always try something new if you run out. Since you are traveling light you can always buy a cheap suitcase for your return to bring treasures back. From reading all these posts, I now suspect that you are pulling our collective leg. Or at least I hope so.
Best of luck.

BKnight, I asked a simple question about products in Europe! It's not my fault this tread keeps going.

Don't forget to pack the Charmin. And, some Kleenex. Oh, and of course some Wet Ones. You don't want to use the European versions - not as good, don't ya know.

I;m surprised Budman hasn't chimed in with a beer recommendation. I'd certainly be wary of that German stuff. Tastes too much like .... well, beer.

Not my hero one way or the other. ABBA is merely one of the most famous/successful groups in history. Not some exotic or obscure rock band. Honest. Like I said - even in Arkansas they are famous. Does Mama Mia ring a bell? -- Nah - never mind . . .

(gotta be a troll)

Yep, the 'never heard of ABBA' comment must confirm this as a troll.

Good one though!

I will suggest some very important questions for you:

1) Where can I get the best beer in Munich?
2) Where can you see those burly beer carrying waitresses in their skimpy tops?
3) Are there any special kind of liquers which you would recommend in Paris? I love brandy but would like to try something interesting while on my travels....maybe some absinthe?

these are the kind of questions that this forum is good with.......

There are trolls on this thread but I don't think Mr Dreamer is one.

Hi Rob,

>the quote is not mine - it is a very famous quote from "The Ugly American" ... I thought Uncle Ira would recognize it.<

Score one for you.

My response still stands, though.

Tourists are very similar, whatever their origin.

Depends if you go East or West from Moscow.
