Amalfi vs. Capri

My fiance and I are honeymooning in Italy in September. We are staying in Capri at The Palace the first two nights. Then we have to downgrade to a more moderately priced hotel for the remaining 5 nights. We are trying to figure out if we should stay in Capri or one of the other hotels on the Amalfi Coast. We have found hotels in both locations and plan to take day trips throughout our week long trip. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you plan to take day trips, Sorrento is the best base. It also has the most night life of the area, besides the honeymoon aspect that is.

I think 2 nights in Capri is enough.
While just beautiful, Capri is small and there's just so much you can do.
I would spend 4 nights in Positano,
we stayed at the Le Agave and loved it,
and do your day trips from there. I would spend the last night near your departure city. Your honeymoon sounds fabuous.

Just a thought--I agree that the Amalfi coast is the best area to see, and that a couple of days on Capri are enough. But Sorrento can be a bit cramped if you are traveling by auto. If you are going by train, Sorrento would probably be best.

By auto, you might consider staying in (or just outside) the charming village of Amalfi. It's always been my favorite, and the Mirmalfi Hotel just up the hill is a nice place.

Positano is also lovely, but be prepared for a lot of hill climbing. Unless you are in pretty good shape, you'll find it very tiring. Good luck.

I would do the other nights away from Capri - since your travel back and forth to the island is limited after about 5pm. By staying in one of the towns ont he mainland it's much easier to travel around and see the various sights - and not worry making the last (quite early) boat back.

Sorrento is great as a travle base - since it has train, bus and boat options. further down the coast you're more limited - and travel can be very time-consuming.

Driving isn't much fun for the driver unless they actually love to drive. That area has great public transportation and every can enjoy the trip.
