Thanks for the help, everyone.
Marianna..that is very interesting, especially given that you have experience with both of the hotels I mentioned in Sorrento itself. It sounds like the Tramontana would be a good bet, with a sea view room.
Sant Agnello sounds lovely but it appears that it might be a bit inconvenient for our needs, given that we plan only two nights in Sorrento. But if taxis are readily available and reasonable and I can save on the room.......???
I am thinking of splitting this trip between Sorrento, Amalfi and Naples. I have been to each of these places in the past but quite a few years ago so I do not remember that much detail. I am not choosing Ravello; I know it is beautiful but too inconvenient for us. We want to be able to ferry to various towns..particularly want to explore the lesser-visited places like Cetara and Vietri...maybe Paestum...probably less interested in Positano, as odd as that may sound! (Have been before long ago..)
We only have one week, Saturday to Sunday. The reason for choosing to stay in Sorrento would be to have easy access to Pompeii, where I have never been. (Have been to Ercolano, though). We might spend the first two nights there after arrival, do a trip to Pompeii and then move on to Amalfi. Alternatively we could skip overnighting in Sorrento and just visit on a day trip en route to Pompeii from Amalfi. (How complicated would that be by bus/train or ferry/train?)
I totally forgot about May 1! SAB thanks for reminding me! So it looks like both April 25 and May 1 are major holidays which should be avoided.
So I would now lean towards mid-April, I think. Would most of the ferries be running then?
Still debating about the car issue...
