Advice on Dublin Hotels

Hi, Am looking for a quiet, large-size room in Dublin. Was booked at the Gresham, but others in my party changed that to the Westbury after a contact in Dublin recommended we change. Even though the contact lives in Dublin, I am less than convinced after reading reviews on Fodors for the Westbury. This is a corporate trip, which means that we are looking for hotels in the 150 - 300 euro price range. At the moment, I am considering the Berkley Court, Four Seasons, and the Merrion. Any thoughts?

Westbury is a really nice hotel right in the centre of Dublin. All the other hotels you mention are also very nice but the Four Seasons and the Berkeley Court are outside of the city (about 10-15mins in a car, depending on traffic)
If you're into posh hotels you might look up the Clarence and the Westin hotel, both of which are in the centre.
Anyone I know who's stayed in the Westbury has been happy with it, although it doesn't have lots of character (try the Shelbourne for that..)

Thanks Jo. I guess I'm looking for a deluxe hotel, with character, large rooms, in a quiet setting in Dublin. The kind of place that you'd find Sherlock Holmes - fireplace, comfy furniture, books, etc. Does such a place exist?

We stayed at the Merrrion a couple of yrs. ago & it was VERY nice. The Westbury is a little more convenient as far as the location goes, but the Merrrion has more charm. It might be about a 5 min. walk into the center, but the location is interesting - across from Parliment buildings, near a park, and close to a lovely residential area. The rooms were VERY nicely done.

hi,
If I had the choice and the money I would go for the Shelbourne- it has loads of character and is one of Dublin's oldest hotels.
Julia Roberts' favourite place to stay when she's in town!!

Sorry Jo, but I agree with Elsa. We stayed at both the Merrion and the Shelbourne in December 2001 and thought the Merrion won hands down - it was all class, while we were anonymous at the Shelbourne and found it to be a bit run down.

Nancy,

I live in Dublin and placed poeople in hotels for bookings with my work. I think the westbury is great for location and the rooms are bigger than average in Dublin. The hotel lobby has been renovated last year and the small bar beside the lobby has a fire and leather tall backed chairs (a la sherlock holmes!) The shelbourne has gottoen really ruun down and I would not reccommend at all. The merrion is fantastic and worth every penny but VERY expensive. It has an older feel to it and very elegant. Also I like the Fitzwilliam Hotel on Stephens Green. It is a top rated hotel and quite modern. Ypou can get a room overlooking the park. Berkely court too far and not up to the standards of the hotels above, and finally the Fourseasons is outside the city and to be honest once you have been in one Four Seasons they are all the same. My choice would be merrion first snd westbury/Fitzwilliam Hotel 2nd.

A good restauranr around the corner from the Merrion is called Bang.

Enjoy

I would agree with the above posters that the Shelbourne is run down - its great to go it there for drinks but I was not that keen!!

I stayed at the Westin and liked that - my favourite hotelin allof Dublin has to be the Jury Towers in Ballsbridge - very quaint although only problem is its a cab ride away from town.
