Hi Elly,

I stayed at a convent in Rome last September for one night. The name and address is Isitituto Santa Giuliana Falconieri, Via San Giuseppe Calasanzio, 1 00186 Roma
Tel: 06-6880-3344 Fax 06-6871-471
The email is [email protected], I corresponded with Sister Kathryn to make arrangments. She is very sweet and helpful. The price was 45 euro for a single, it was clean and in a great location. I think for your budget a convent is really the only way to go. Others on the board have stayed here as well and also have positive reviews. Good luck and enjoy Rome-I admire your adventurous spirit.

Also stayed at Santa Giuliana and recommend it highly. Lovely, welcoming, safe, great location. Sr. Kathryn, from Chicago, is a total gem.

Type Rome convent into the search box at the top of the page to see several messages from the archives on the topic.

JenV- I want to piggyback a couple of questions regarding the convent: 1) Do we share bathrooms with other guests? 2) Are we allowed to bring in food into the room (cheese, wine, crackers)? I am a foodie, so I like munching on things even when I am at home relaxing. I know they have rules like curfew etc (which I wont have problem with), but what other rules did you come across?

I am planning a month long trip to Italy, and plan on spending two wks in Rome. I am considering to rent an apt, which would cost me approx 85 Euro/night. So this 45 Euro/night deal sounds rather appealing to me from budget perspective. Thanks!!!

Some convents have no, some, or all rooms with private baths. Fraternus Domus is very well-located, and it has all rooms with private baths.
See:

I've never heard of a convent with the rule of no eating in the rooms.

h2, there were rooms with bathrooms en suite but they were sold out for the night I needed. I think most convents offer both. There were no others using the bathroom at the times I was in it and it felt private to me. As to food, I don't remember any specific rules in that regard so don't think it is an issue. However, if you have two weeks I think an apartment would suit your needs much better IMO as to comfort, bringing (and cooking) food, laundry etc.

I spent a month in Italy three years ago and it was fabulous! It went by too quick. Have a great time.

Thank you both for the replies. I look forward to my trip. I still need to tell my boss first that I am going to quit

The convent I stayed at (in Florence) had a library, large sitting room, a TV room, a breakfast/dinner room, and a garden. So there was no need to feel constricted by just having a small room, which can be an issue in some cheap hotel that have barely any lobby and a tiny breakfast room. I'm not sure if Rome convents would have the same amenities, but it's worth investigating the public areas before committing to a lengthy stay.

You are lucky. I love the idea of just quitting everything and travelling to Europe. You must be young! Good for you!

I also stayed at Santa Giuliani (Hi, Jen!). They only have one double room that has ensuite bath, the others are all shared. I never would have stayed anywhere with a shared bath, but the price, location & elevator made me try it. It really wan't bad at all, it's still a private room, and I never had to wait to use it.

I meant to add that I agree, with two weeks, it would certainly be nice to have the apartment if you can swing it.
