Acc in London and Paris with 4yr & 1yr old

How flexible are hotel occupancy maximums when traveling with small children?

I plan to travel to London and Paris with wife and 2 sons- 3yr and 1yr- this fall. We plan to stay 5 days in each city. Most of the online booking sites are requiring me to select a family or quad room.

It depends on the hotel. I would e-mail them or give them a call to see if they can accommodate the children.

Have you thought about renting a flat? Places like the Scala House (www.scala-house.co.uk) rent 2BR apartments. Could be very convenient with children.

Hotels have their own standards, and they mean them. Their standards will usually be different regarding adults and children, and they say so -- if they have rooms that allow children in a regular room (with the addition of a rollaway or something). If you reserve a regular double room in a budget Parisian hotel without telling the hotel, there will most likely be no room for two extra people, even small children. You aren't going to be allowed to just keep them in your room if you didn't book for them, so you can't keep them a secret.

Jeez Christina, No need to jump all over the guy. He didn't say he was going to stash the kids in a suitcase to sneak them into the hotel. He was just asking what the general convention is regarding young children.

resu, Many Paris & London hotels rooms are smaller than the average US hotel rooms. Some, esp. in London, cannot physically accommodate 4 people, even if two are very small. Kayb is right, ask the individual hotels. Many will make allowances for very little kids and they'll tell you if they can't or won't. Definitely worth asking.

As noted renting an apartment is a very good idea if it's in your budget (and it might by less money than a hotel room). Scala House is a great place for families. The owners are lovely people and can accommodate bedding and highchairs for small ones. There's lots of room to spread out, a kitchen, washer/dryer and a bath and a half.

Another suggestion is the Premier Travel Inn London County Hall, a budget hotel in a fantastic location next to the London Eye on the Thames. The rooms are cookie cutter but are spacious enough to hold a family of 4. The price is by room and not by # of occupants. Next door to the hotel is the Jubilee Gardens with a small picnic area and a playground.

Good luck!

I agree on the recommendation for the Travel Inn County Hall.

I stayed there last spring (in a regular room, not a family room) - but the room was very spacious - as large as most American hotel rooms I've stayed in, and larger than a few of them, too.

I believe the rooms per night are around 88 GBP, which is a great price for the location.

As you note, booking a family online can be tricky since many of the online booking doesn't seem to function well with 4 people or kids. I usually email or phone directly. That way you can explain your specific bedding needs and have some slight hope you might get them.

Would also recommend a flat, and can also suggest Emperor's Gate Apartments, http://www.apartment-hotels.com/ . It's between Earl's Court and Gloucester Road tubes (some will say this is too far, we've enjoyed the location with our kids). We've found the owners to be great with families and very helpful.

I agree with looking into renting an apartment. We're a family of 5 (inc. 3 teenagers) and it was hard to find a hotel in England to accomodate us - most of them wanted us to reserve 3 rooms.

We rented a house in Henley-on-Thames for 8 nights for about $900 in Oct. 2003. It actually came with a small motor boat for our use and the Thames was literally at our back door.

Some places might even be cheaper to rent by the week even if you don't use all the days (and maybe the owner will kick back a little to you at the end).
