Aberdeen Angus steak out?
I've just read an article saying that it is the end of the road for Aberdeen Angus Steak Houses in London. By means of tribute just wondered if anyone out there had some dining experiences there they would wish to share at these empty 70s neon palaces

When I was first going to London back a number of years ago I was given two bits of warning advice.
1) Always look right when stepping off a curb.
2) Never under any circumstances eat at an Aberdeen Angus steak house.
I've been able to follow the second one to the letter, but still sometimes mess up on the first one.

We at an Aberdeen Angus Steak House in Jan. I gave into "group pressure" because we were all hungry and tired and just wanted to eat...we all felt like we were in a bad Las Vegas casino restaurant and the food confirmed the feeling!

I never went in one of those places, but if I walked past one, I would wonder how they stayed in business. They were always empty which is hardly surprising as everybody knew they were awful, but how did they survive for so many years ? Was it some sort of money laundering operation, or was the owner some sort of rich eccentric who didn't mind losing money ?

I never seem to crave steak when I am in London, so I have never been the least bit tempted to eat at an Aberdeen and I don't personally know anyone who has eaten there.
But I have read various warnings on this forum ," Whatever you do doooooon't eat at Aberdeen Angus, ever!!""
Just how gawd- awful are/were these places? Do tell!

They survived care of American tourists and have died with the lull from the Gulf war - every cloud had a silver lining. But they were kind of funny - they were so dated even 15 years ago and as one critic said last week, at least you understood their menu - unlike so many restaurants nowadays.

I know the Fodors monitors frown on quoting, but from the Sunday Times of last October:
"The Aberdeen Angus Steak House truly was grim, but in an instructive way. It was a constant reminder of the fact that, several decades back, all dining in Britain was this miserable and loveless. The Aberdeen Angus Steak House was a living museum with a really bad canteen; an incentive always to count one's blessings. Seeing them go will be like the demise of the red telephone box or the Home Service. It's like the ravens leaving the Tower of London."

These places are primarily responsible for continuing the bad reputation English food has in the minds of the rest of the world. I was often tempted to run in and shout at the dinners to stop and to just try that little bit harder to seek better options. I think this and the congestion charge is one of the best things to happen to London in the last 50 years
