Pre-Cruise Venice Hotel

Starting a cruise in mid-May from Venice and would like a reasonable and convenient hotel. Since it is our 3rd trip to Venice...we are looking for a bargain...but nice!

We stayed in an apartment rented from Hotel d'Art. It had no view but was conveniently located and reasonably priced. If I were going soon, I would be sure to call them and see what they can offer.

I like the Hotel Messner in Dorsoduro. It's within walking distance of several good restaurants, as well as the Peggy Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Bridge. It's almost directly across the canal from San Marco. The included breakfast was also pretty good. Rooms are small, but it's a bargain.

An excellent hotel, close to St Marks and easy walk from vaparetto stop is Hotel Ala, a Best Western affiliate. Pricing is fair, the rooms are nice, and the included breakfast is very good and substantial. We used it prior to our cruise and it met our needs perfectly. It is located on the same square as the uber-expensive Hotel Gritti Palace. Here is a link

Does anyone have an opinion on staying at the Hotel Molino Stucky? It is across the way on Giudecca Island and I am leary of being too far to be able to enjoy early morning sightseeing. Comments?

We stayed here before our cruise in June last year. It was very nice, the people at the desk were wonderful, and they assist the cruise ship people.
