My husband and I stayed there for four days and then flew over to the Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas for three days. We wished we had done the Ritz for the whole trip. The Ritz was cheaper and MUCH nicer! We thought it was dump for the price! If you don't mind screaming children running around the pool area and a so so room, then you will be fine. The food was average. We couldn't wait to leave and go to the Ritz. The brochures look nice and it is landscaped nice, but the actual stay was "so so". The Puerto Ricans like to vacation there, so we had to deal with screaming children running around the place. Been there, done that..won't go back.

If you're looking for a quiet, laid back beach vacation, you may want to look elsewhere, although the El Conquistador has a GREAT beach (an island), and I found the service at the resort to be excellent. The screaming kids were indeed a big problem, in my book. Like all vacations, it's what you make of it. My husband and I quickly learned the tricks to avoiding the kids and other annoyances, but it was a shame we had to do that, with the price you pay to stay there. I'm torn on what to tell you, because the island made it worthwhile to me - only because I wanted to just lay in the sun and swim each day. We went out on the boat to the island each morning and stayed all the way at the end of the beach all day. It was really nice. Good luck!

We've been to Puerto Rico twice this year. Our first stay was at the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort which is a 1 hour drive from Old San Juan. This lovely beachfront resort sits on 500 acres of scenic tropical beauty and is near the El Yunque Rainforest. They had 18 hole golf courses, 2 swimming pools, health club, 13 tennis courts, a casino, and children's activities. Our second time around we stayed at the Hyatt Regency Cerromar Beach Resort which is on Puerto Rico's north coast. This is an elegant hotel with 1,000 tropical acres and home to one of PR's finest beaches. It also has 4 bars, 6 restaurants, a great casino, health club, spa, and a huge river pool. While drinking our Bacardi & Coke and Pina Coladas from our picturesque balcony, we both knew we were in heaven! So tropical, serene & beautiful. And, we really enjoy the nightlife and great restaurants that PR offers. Our next trip to PR will most likely be at the luxurious Martineau Bay in Vieques.

We were just there in July and thought the hotel was a huge waste of money. Poor service, huge crowds, lots of screaming kids, and extremely over-priced, just okay food. Plus, you can't get a pool towel after 4:00 pm )even though the pools are open 24 hours a day). If you stay at the marina, the only way up to the main hotel is via a funicular. One of the two funiculars was consistenly not working and it often took us about 15 minutes to get to the main hotel. The only nice thing is the island which is a 10-15 minute boat ride away.

My husband and I stayed at the El Conquistador last week for 2 nights. We found a wonderful deal on Expedia.com. The hotel was amazing and we had a great time exploring the private island. Our room faced the ocean and we were able to enjoy the full moon over the water. I would go again in a heart beat! I agree with Laura, "it's what you make of it."
