Worried about Sandals

I am getting married at Sandals Antigua on October 5 - I leave in 2 weeks and you guys have me worried! I have never been to the caribbean and when I booked my trip my travel agent just automatically said "How about a Sandals resort" and I said OK! After it was booked is when I started to do my research. I'm stuck with it now, is it really THAT bad?

Tiffany,
Well the time to do your research would have been before you booked the wedding and honeymoon but what's done is done.
I would advise you not to stress out too much about it. Make the best of the situation. You may enjoy it more than some others would. I know lots of people who want all-inclusive for their honeymoon because they don't want to make any decisions. That still holds true. Just relax and enjoy the time with your new husband.

Well Tiffany, if that's really your name you'll probably be just fine. At any rate, as you said you're stuck with it now so make the best of it.

This should teach you a lesson though. Never, ever trust a TA without doing some research first. It's an easy commission for the TA, pratically effortless for them to book. Did the agent even ask you what you like, didn't like, etc? They must love customers like you.

Look at it as a learning experience, and at least now you know what to expect so you won't have any misconceptions.

Tiffany,
If this is your first trip to the Caribbean, you will most likely have a wonderful time and enjoy Sandals.
I'd suggest you venture out and do some other things though. There is a wonderful party on Sundays with live music in Shirley Heights on Antigua.
You have enough to think about right now without stressing over this.
Just relax and enjoy the totally new experience you are getting ready to have.
BTW, Congratulations!

If I may put my two cents in here...I am a travel agent (just wanted to get that out there). From my experience, sometimes these boards cause more harm than good. I've had countless numbers of clients book a vacation (to wherever) then come on these boards and become frantic because so and so didn't like the resort for whatever reason.

You absolutely must do some research weather it be before you see an agent, while you are with the agent or after the agent gives you some recommendations.

Personally, I really like Sandals. I have been to all of them as well as Ritz Carltons, the Lidos, Atlantis and more fabulous resorts in the Caribbean. So, I do have others to compare to.

Bottom line, everyone likes different things. Travel agents must qualify your likes and dislikes before they can go recommending something to you, but I wouldn't fret. I really liked Sandals Antigua. The island was beautiful, they have a nice beach, clean rooms, a friendly staff and good food.

As long as you and your new husband are together and you know you are going to a decent place, that would make me happy.

Tiffany, First of all, please ignore the previous post that stated "if that is your real name". Posters like that are obnoxious and they once accused me of working for a travel agency only because I recommended that agency here after I had used & had a great experience. I actually was referred by a post in this forum.

With that being said.....in the future you may not choose Sandals, but I think you will be fine on this trip. It will be what you and your new husband make of it. That is what matters, the two of you. Sadly there are alot of people that don't even know that these chat forums exist. When I was doing my research for our Negril New Year's trip, I fell upon this site. I was really only looking for a type written review of the hotel we chose, saw this forum, and ended up here. It was a great asset for me while researching where to go, and like I said, it hooked me up with this great travel agent that a post recommended to me. I was so grateful.

Ask for a upgrade to your room, relax, and remember that this is really about the two of you. Try to focus on the good of the trip and not the bad. If youmake a big deal abou the negative then it will be a big deal and it will ruin you trip and probably break you husband's heart to see you so sad. It's too late to do anything else I should think, although if I were you, I would call my travel agent and speak to him/her about my concerns.
Happy Wedding, and enjoy each other! Let the rest of it slide off! It will be what you make of it!

Thank you so much for the positive posts. I feel better and you are right, we must focus on the positive. I mean we are going to be getting married, in the Caribbean. I would be happy sleeping in a tent on the beach! I and from the states, in my early 20s and haven't been able to travel much. The only place I have been out of the country is Cancun for a high school trip!! So from what I can tell, Sandals may be perfect for us (considering we are inexperienced). I did not do any research before I booked because silly me didn't realize there was so much research that could be done! I booked through my friend who is a travel agent so I trusted her, that's why I asked no questions. So thanks for the positive comments and the congrats. It was of some reassurance.

Sandals took over one of the best beach properties in Antigua so don't worry terribly much. It's still Sandals but less 'fun 'n organized games' than many Sandals in Jamaica. There's very little else to do/see on island: St.John's is tiny;English Harbor is a bore unless you a sailor;Shirley Heights has a good jump-up weekends;for a more upscale dinner out, reserve a table at Curtain Bluff.

Tiffany, you may be in your early twenties, but hearing your positive attitude has me believing that you are mature beyond your years. Good for you for demonstrating the ability to focus on the positive. It will indeed be what you make of it. If I had it to do all over again, I would run away with my guy anywhere, just the two of us, no fan fare, just us exchanging vows because in the long run the two of you are all that matters.
Again I am pleased with the way you have CHOSEN to view this, you guy is a lucky man. This will show him how you will handle any crisis/concern that will arise in the future!
Enjoy, be happy, and congratulations!

Tiffany, Have a great time! Don't worry at all. I think a lot of Sandals posters have paid too much in the past, or been to a run down Sandals at one time. You're going to a great place, the prices have come down in the past couple of years, so I'm sure you got a fair price. Please post when you get back, negative or positive, we'll be waiting to hear. Happy nuptuals!

Tiffany,

I was there a little less then 2 years ago. The place is so awesome. The beach is perfect. The water is crystal clear and you won't be disapointed. The posters above just dont have anything better to do with their time...they probably can't afford to go so they are jealous. Enjoy, I know I did! Trust me, this place is top notch.

Tiffany- I was married at a Sandals resort in Jamaica 9 years ago. I too was in my twenties. You have nothing to worry about. I am not picky and had the attitude that whatever happens happens. If you want a wedding with all the frills this is not for you. The most important thing to me was marrying my husband. We had a great time and after 9 years I do not regret my decision for one second. The wedding coordinator was fine and the photographer was so-so. The laundry room caught on fire before we got there and my to-be husband ironed my dress. Our wedding day was scorching hot and the wedding cake attracted flies. Hours before the ceremony my husband got stung by a sea urchin and also got a bad sunburn. Overall, we have lots of good laughs and memories. Don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy yourself.

Tiffany,

We too were married in the islands so beleive me when I say, youwill love every minute of it! It is just such a great experience and Sandals really does make this hassle free so jsut relax and enjoy.

Next off, we have been to Sandals Antigua and it really is a beautiful property. the grounds are very lush and tropical and just a very relaxiing and romantic atmosphere. Nice choices of activities each day or do nothing at all. Nice eating out near the water too. Try a Sip Sop at the pool bar!

Sandals is on a great piece of beach. If you walk to the far end (past Antigua Village) and up the small hill, there is a very beautiful view - you will feel like you are the only person on the island. I do agree that you should try to get out and experience some of the island as well. Shirley Heights on Sunday is great fun - good local food and music and the view of the harbor at sunset is super so bring a camera. The people of Antigua are so great to speak with.

Enjoy, relax and have a great wedding! You are going with a great positive attitude so no doubt you will have a great time!

Thank you all SO much for the posts. I thought this was going to be perfect when I first booked, but then after researching I was a little worried. Now I am even more excited after seeing some of these posts! I am not worried about the ceremony because all I care about is me and my sweetie bare foot on the beach! I don't want any frills at all! Thanks, again everyone!

Tiffany,
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. I am sure you will have a wonderful time.
Sandals Antigua is one of the few I have not visited, but I know they refurbished a couple of years ago after a major hurricane.
From my reseach it is one of the nicest Sandals.

Sandals Antigua is a paradise! Rooms are nice and this is a great island. The watersports people make the water an exciting part of this resort. Congratulations and best wishes
