I have been to Jamaica several times also. Love it. If you stay at an AI, go ahead and get a guide to take you around. Let them drive and show you some nice locations. Went deep into the Jamaican hills and to Mayfield Falls. Truely a beautiful place. Use common sence and all will be OK.

Just wanted to say a thank you to those that offer such valuable information. Although I have only posted one question on the Carib board, I do tend to talk - probably too much! - on the Costa Rica subject. I too often wonder what happens to the person that asks a question and then vanishes?
Anyway, my original question specifically said that I was not interested in Jamaica. However, as I continue to investigate the Caribbean, I am finding many interesting posts on Jamaica. My main concern of Jamaica did not have as much to with crime and safety, as I know I have to be careful with my daughters. But more to the fact that in my mind Jamaica is one huge All Inclusive Resort! My actual only experience was a company trip to an AI - Rose Hall in Montego Bay. It was ok for the 100+ people but I was bored to tears. The thought of hiding behind a locked gate, gives me hives! So yesterday I peeked in at Rockhouse and Idle Awhile, when my daughters looked over my shoulder, that got real excited. So maybe I will give it another thought. It is really rather narrow minded of me to allow that one trip to cloud my perspective.
Anyway, thanks to all that offer your time and experience. Maybe someday soon I can offer a little back. But if you want to go to Costa Rica, just head over and ask a question - if I have an answer you can't shut me up!

I have been to Jamaica five times in the past few years. Never stayed in an AI, but mostly in small private hotels. Did spend a few days in Kingston, but that has nothing to do with vacation!!
Take precautions here as you would anywhere. Please do go off property and explore some (with a driver).
My advice: If you can smile and say hello! you'll be fine.
