Traveling Alone to St. Thomas

In 2 weeks, I'll be going to St. Thomas. I'm a single female and was wondering how safe it is to venture out and see the island alone. I'll be staying at the Blazing Villas located on the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort property. Is this a good place? Also, are there any places for me to go and meet other single travelers. What about going out to clubs at night. Is it safe to take a taxi by myself. Thanks

For nightlife do not go downtown--only to other hotels for entertainment!

I was on STT last week (stayed at the Marriott), but visited the Renaissance and had a great lunch at Fungi (next door). It seemed like a nice resort area, but it would be very dark outside of the resort (narrow streets and limited street lights -- would not recomend walking alone outside the resort).

To answer your questons...

Yes, I feel taxis are safe, and most of them are vans, so you may not ever be "alone."

I agree with the other poster, stay out of CA alone at night.

Red Hook seemed safe and had a lot to do, but plan on using taxis to and from and stay in well lit areas -- Yacht Harbor complex should be fine at night.

If you are really looking for lots of nightlife, you may have picked the wrong island...most of the "safe" things to do at night are at the big resort hotels...the beach bar at the Marriott (Cocco Joe's) was hoping some nights and dead other nights. I imagine the bars at the Ren are about the same...Fungi looked like it might be fun at night, but most of th epeople on STT will be couples and families...it's not a big swingles kind of place.
