stt & sj

We will be going to St. Thomas and ST. John with our three boys, aged 2 months, 6, & 7. Couple of questions... 1. any hotel recommendations on St. Thomas? 2. activity recommendations on both islands that would be appropriate for 6 & 7 year olds? 3. restaurant recommendations there? 4. what do you think of the westin in st johns?

thanks.
Jeanne

Jeanned,
If you do a search on Westin St. John and restaurants in STT, you will find a lot of information. That said,

hotels -- Secret Harbour is great for families on the East End of the island, nice placid beach, smaller hotel. Frenchman's Reef (haven't been there) also seems to get good reviews. The Ritz is lovely, if you are willing to spend the money. The Westin on St. John has a big, fun pool for kids and adults and a lousy beach - but you can rent a car or take cab to the amazing north shore beaches.

Take the kids to Magens Bay, Mountain Top, maybe the tram ride up the hill in town.

We stayed with my five kids at the Westin last year...We liked the hotel, pool area is decent, however beach is not (lots of seaweed)... you will want to visit some of the far superior beaches elsewhere on the Island. Dinner options for kids at the Westin aren't great either, we tended to eat off-site and to buy breakfast stuff at one of the markets such as Starfish and bring it back to the room. Beaches like Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay on St John and Magen's on St Thomas are good with kids because they have amentiies like snack bars and toilets. Pastory Gardens on St John has mini-golf that the kids might enjoy while you watch the sunset with a drink in your hand....Seniorita Pizza & Cafe Roma were both kid-friendly in Cruz Bay. On St. Thomas, the tram ride in C.A should entertain the kids as well
Have fun!

hi jeanned, i second secret harbour (www.secretharbourvi.com) its all condos with kitchens. you can go the grocery and fix the kids pb&js for lunch and so forth. their beach is excellent. big enough for the 6&7 to run around, but small enough for you to still watch them easily. the snorkeling to the right of the beach is outstanding. good restaurant on site. secret harbor is also very near red hook ferry which is how you get to st.j. the ritz is way fancy. i doubt you kids would like the stuffy menu. take your kids to coral world (approx. 15 mins drive from s.h. to the east.at coki point) they have undersea observatory, 80,000 gal. viewing tank, shark and touch pools (NOT the same pools). very cool place. restaurants abound on st.t - don't recall specifics but there were a couple pizza/casual rest. in red hook. chenk out www.usvitourism.vi for a pile of info. have a great trip!

another thought. not sure your kids are old enough to enjoy this but there is a very cool boat ride. you go on a cigarette boat modified to carry about a dozen. leaves red hook and goes FAST to the baths, virgin gorda, marina cay for lunch/drinks and joyce van dyke. about 6 hours as i recall. also the dive shops all offer snorkel by catamaran trips which are nice but i not sure about taking the infant...
