St. Thomas/St. John Trip

My wife and I are travelling to St. Thomas and St. John next month. We are staying at the Frenchman's Reef and the Westin St. John. Any advice with these hotels would be helpful.

Also, we are considering having dinner on St. John at either Cafe Bordeaux, Stone House or Asolare. What is the dress like at these restaurants? Is it nicer "Island wear" (khakis, etc.) or is it dressier (jackets for guys)?

Also, we are considering going without a car for the week, generally staying at the resorts during the day and going out for dinner. Is it possible to do this by taxi? Also, is it possible to get to the National Park on St. John via taxi or foot from the Westin?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would highly recommend renting a car/'jeep' on St. John just to give you the opportunity to explore the island. With a rental car you can go anywhere you want on your own schedule. St. John is too beautiful of an island to only see the Cruz Bay area.

Should we rent a car for one day or for the three days that we are on St. John? In other words, is there enough to see to fill the other days?

JMO but I don't think a car is need on STT if your only going to leave the resort for dining. For 2 of you it will probably cost less to taxi it then rent a car.

For St. John I would say that renting a car for 1 or 3 days is based on what your interests are. If you are a big beach goer/snorkeler then I'd recommend a jeep to get to some of those less traveled parts which offer great snorkeling and possibly solitude. There are some beaches that the taxi's can't/won't go to. I guess it boils down to how much you want to be on the go.

I, also would rent a car for the 3days, there are so many gorgeous beaches. The dress is casual, men do not need a jacket. We ate at Asolare and khakis and shirt for men and for women pants or a little summer dress is fine. Noone we saw was decked out. It's not like Bermuda.

We stayed at the Westin in December (I did a trip report you can look up). The beach there is not great--you'll think it is fine until you visit the others on the island! I would rent a car for a couple days for exploring the island and beach excursions (take a cab at night, plentiful and safer if you are having a couple drinks!).

Our favorite restaurant is Asolare. It has the best views of the sunset and looks right over Cruz Bay and St Thomas. No jackets needed, but it is a special night out. Nice island wear would do.

Have a great time and definetly explore the island!
