Resort Dilemma
My boyfriend and I are thinking about getting married in the Carribean (Jamaica) in August. Since we both had big traditional weddings the first time around, this time it will be just the two of us and we want something different. I have gotten many brochures from different all-inclusive resorts (Sandals, SuperClubs, Couples). We were trying to decide between Sandals Dunn's River and Grand Lido Braco. But after reading some messages about these resorts I am not too sure. He is 35 and I am 27. We are both out-going and like to have a good time but also enjoy quiet romantic (alone) time. Any information to all-inclusive resorts would be helpful. All suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks

Congrats on the upcoming marriage!

Unhappily, your plans are right smack in the start of hurricane season, and Jamaica is in the hurricane belt.

My hubby and I like all inclusives, especially at a resort called LeSport, which provides 2x daily spa treatments for you both also besides TONS of other things to do (Fencing lessons, Tai Chi instruction, etc.). However, LeSport is in St. Lucia, who is also in the hurricane belt.

I recommend your considering their sister resort, LaSource in Grenada, which provides spa treatments 1x a day. Honeymooners get a bottle of champagne and fruit plate upon arrival. Check out LaSource's website. Grenada has friendly folks, and LaSource's beach is pretty private. It's not the absolute BEST compared to others on Grenada, but it's nice, and you can travel around to the others. But the food is great, all meals + 4pm High Tea and premium liquors, and no tipping to any staff. LaSource can help your wedding arrangements for whatever you want.

If not Grenada, then Curacao, Aruba, Trinidad & Tobago, or Marguerita Island, which are all outside of the hurricane belt from August thru Nov.

Hope this helps, and all the best.

August may indeed have hurricane possibilities in the Caribbean, but August in Jamaica is generally hot and sunny, so don't let that unwarranted scare vex you at all. For the second time around, think smarter
tay out of the Sandals/Couples/SuperClubs etc. all-inclusives and choose a private villa or more exclusive/intriguing Jamaica destination where you'll get far more for your dollar, let alone style and privacy. See GOLDENEYE
(off-season rates) in Orcabessa (islandoutpost.com), THE CAVES in Negril (same site),a private villa at ROUNDHILL or on THE BLUE HOLE at PORT ANTONIO for starters.

Tiff,

Check out a villa at Tryall. They can also handle all the arrangements for your pending nuptials (always liked that phrase -- seldom get a chance to use it).
Go to www.tryallclub.com and take a look.

Tiff - I know a lot of people don't care for Sandals and I will hear it for this one but...I was married less than a month ago at Sandals Antigua. Let me say that I booked my trip through a friend who is a travel agent and she suggested Sandals so I went with it.

The resort exceeded my expectations. And the beach was breathtaking!! And as for my wedding day, I couldn't have asked for better. They took care of EVERYTHING. All we had to do was show up and fill in the blanks! The photographs turned out wonderful, I couldn't have asked for better. I could have never imagined having so much fun getting married! No stress what-so-ever!! We also met another couple that was getting married later that day that we became friends with. It was also their second marriages and I had never seen two people have more fun at their wedding than these 2!! The photographer was laughing the entire time...and they fill you full of wedding cake, h'ordourves and lots and lots of champagne! It was a blast!

If you stay in a villa and are married somewhere else, then you will have to worry about all the details. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. But if you'd like to have a beautiful, stress-free, fun wedding, I would suggest going to a resort (even if you don't chose Sandals). If you want any more details or if you would like to see pictures, please e-mail me. I would be happy to help.

I have read many posts on this subject and I was also looking 2 years ago.

With advice and much searching we chose St. John. Really beautiful, the wedding was at the water's edge. We rented a villa. St. John is much prettier and safer than Jamaica. Stunning island.

Do more searching before you decide on Jamaica.

Tiff,

Not to confuse you but just to set the record straight.

We got married this year in Negril, Jamaica and it was fantastic. We have traveled all over the world and really liked Jamaica. The people are great.

We also priced the BVI and USVI and it was substantially more expensive than Negril. Renting a villa in St. John, the food, the rental of everything that is not included in the villa etc. and the 17% service charge on everything runs up a sizable tab.

We had our wedding at an all inclusive, it was reasonably priced and they did a terrific job. Food great, beaches fantastic, great water sports, diving etc.

Those who bash Jamaica haven't been there or they aren't open to the culture.

I have traveled all around Jamaica and other islands - and Jamaica is the most beautiful. If there is a more diverse and beautiful island in the Caribbean - I haven't seen it.

Yes the city of Kingston is a little unstable. But that is like saying you won't go to Lake Placid because New York City is dangerous......the logic is ridiculous.

Just my two cents to help you with a decision.
I absolutely agree with the poster named Tivertonhouse. If you truly want Jamaica, Goldeneye is gorgeous. The Caves is a nice but rustic property; it offers spa treatments (not included in price, tho). Both are high-end price ranges especially cause they are AI. Both offer personalized service. Caves has 'in-cave' dining...a uniqe experience.

I really think you should consider LaSource in Grenada (very romantic), especially to stay out of the hurricane / tropical storm time.

Just FYI, if you are re-marrying in the Caribbean, don't forget to bring the Divorce decree - VERY important, as well as birth certificates and passports.
