Renting a car in Grand Cayman
We will be there in early October. I have seen posts saying to rent from Andy's, Hertz, Dollar or Avis. Are any of those better than the other; newer car, better rates etc....
This is the first time to Grand Cayman, this website/board has been absolutely fantastic in providing good information!
Can't wait to get there!!!
Thanks in advance,
Dave

We rented from Andy's and had no problems. We were able to get a discounted rate by booking online. I think the web site is caymandiscounts.com. If that's not right, let me know, and I'll look for it. If you do rent from Andy's, be aware that it is across a (small) street from the airport and not lined up by the airport with the other car rental agencies. It's not far at all, but just in a little different direction. We didn't know this until we had carried our bags down to the other car rental agencies. But the car was fine. The hard part is getting used to driving on the left!

We rented a Jeep Wrangler from Avis. They are right adjacent to the airport. The Wrangler was a new model, very nice. The pick-up and return went very smooth. Very nice people at Avis. The Jeep cost me $ 374.00 US for 6 days.

We have used Andy's on both our visits to GC. Both times they had the cheapest rates. Keep in mind, that Andy's cars may have a few miles on them, a few dings/scratches, and are far from new. But the staff are usually very nice, and their rates are usually the lowest. Driving on the left is certainly different at first, but we found it easy to get used to...just follow everyone else!!

Thanks for the replies!
We are looking forward to this trip so much, it can't get here fast enough.
This is the best site I have found so far for asking questions AND getting timely answers.

We rented from Andy's our first vacation there and some poster said previously that Andy's cars have a few miles on them - that was understated - our car practically fell apart - things falling off it, etc. That was just my experience though and I know a lot of poeple have gotten decent vehicles from Andy's... in short - we took our "jeep" back to Andy's and then walked across the street to Marshall's and got a great little car in perfect condition.

We got a right-hand drive car. We found that it helped us remember that everything was not normal -- i.e. that we should be driving differently. I'm afraid if we had a left-hand drive car it would be easier to forget that we were supposed to drive on the other side of the road. However, make sure you get an automatic so you won't have to learn how to shift with your left hand.

We will be in GC for the first time in March for 11 days, staying at Rum Point. Our thoughts were to take a cab to our condo, hang out and relax around there a few days, then rent a car to see the rest of the island for the last few days. Does this sound like a good idea? Can we rent a car from 7-Mile Beach or do we have to go back to the airport? Thanks

To snorkelsue,
I would rent a car for your entire stay at Rum Point. Pick it up at the airport when you arrive. Cab fare will be $50+ just to get to the condo. We have been staying at Rum Point for over 15 years and believe me, you'll need a car the entire trip. Which condos are you staying at?

In response to Frodo55,
We always rent a car with the steering wheel on the left side as that's what we are used to. Driving on the left will feel awkward at first, but we found that you get used to it very quickly. Everything will be opposite if you drive a right-handed vehicle. They say if you see someone put their wipers on, they're about to turn!!

To snorkelsue,
You'll love the Retreat!! That's where we stay. The condos are beautiful and have everything you'll need. If your there on a Sunday, make sure you go to the Driftwood Bar for their Sunday BBQ. It's 2 miles down the road from the Retreat. Great food and fun atmosphere! We'll be at the Retreat next month, and I'm praying everything goes well with Ivan today! If you have any questions about the Retreat or the north side of the island, feel free to e-mail me.

Hi. We rented from Andy's and would never do that again! Our story is like a previous poster's -- our "jeep" barely ran and was close to falling apart. When we returned it, we told them that the transmission was about shot, and she already knew it! They sent us out for seven days in a vehicle they KNEW might simply quit at any time. She said, "You use us the next time, and we will make sure you get a 'good car.' "
Never again...
Luckily, this was the one and only negative thing we could say about our trip to the island. Other that that, we absolutely loved GC and can't wait to return. In fact, we may look into retiring on the island, at least for the winter months. Good thing we have several years to save up!
