Puerto Rico

Message: Visiting PR for 10 days early April, have everything planned except the last 2 days. Planed on visitng Boqueron and stay at the Joydua Beach Hotel because it is suppose to be on a clear swimmable beach. The alternative is to visit Rincon instead and stay at Villa Cofresi or Cocunt Palms or Flores del Mar Inn because they too are suppose to be on a clear swimmable beach. Anyone stayed at any of these places. Are the beaches they are on nice. Anyone stayed at La Paloma in Ceiba?

Do a search for the Joyuda Beach Hotel. There was a post about this place in late February. One of the posts was fairly comprehensive about the beach.

We just came back from Joyuda Beach two weeks ago. We stayed at the Joyuda Beach hotel for 3 nights. Not very impressed by it. The hotel smells and I got bitten by something in bed and felt itchy the whole time. The room is very basic, worst than a Day?s inn by American Standard. We had a king bed but they didn't have King bed sheet. So they put two full sheets together to make the bed. The beach is not a good siwmming beach. It has very shallow water about 2 feet the most. The beach is tiny and the sand is not fine. You can't go too far out since there is a breaker between the beach and the ocean. The reef just off the hotel is all dead and so you can't do snorkeling either. We ended up go to Boqueron for swimming and Gilligan's Island for snorkeling.

The website photo looks much prettier than the real thing!

We asked the staff where was a good place to eat, the only thing they would recommended was the hotel restaurant. In fact, there are plenty of best PR seafood restaurants nearby.

The only good thing with the hotel is it is cheap. We only paid $65 including tax per week night. And it is close to all the good seafood restaurants and it is pretty convenient to all the attractions in west PR. If you do decide to stay there, call the hotel directly. You'll get better deal than through some hotel booking websites.

Hi. I hope I've responded in time to be of some help. I have not visited Boqueron but I have visited Rincon twice. In fact, I'm moving there this May.
I stayed at Cocunut Palms a few years ago and really liked it. However, I also stayed there for one night last month and did not enjoy it as much. It has become a little run down. The hot tub was broken. The windows cannot be opened.....I assume to save on air conditioning costs. The owners are friendly and helpful. Some rooms are definitely nicer than others. Most have very well equiped kitchens. There are no phones. The beach is very nice, but you will need to go to a beach called The Steps to find good snorkeling close to shore. I have never stayed at the Villa Confresi but I always hear positive things.....of course, it is a lot more expensive than Coconut Palms. Their restaurant is one of the best on the island (but also expensive)They are on basically the same beach as Coconut Palms. If you don't mind driving to the beach (Approx. 2 miles), another option (actually there are many) would be the Lazy Parrot. I stayed for a week. It's quiet and clean. They also have a good restaurant. My room had a small refridgerator. I don't know it they have more extensive options. I also liked the fact that it is owned by a Puerto Rican. Two negatives, apparently they have sometimes billed themselves as a resort. They are really a small inn. But, they do have a nice pool and bar. Their continental breakfast begins at 9:00. Since I am always out and going by then, I never benefited.

I don't know if this response is too late for your travel planning, but here it goes anyway.

The 2 best places to stay in that part of Puerto Rico (southwest) are:

Parador Bahia Salinas/Bahia Salinas Beach Hotel
http://www.pinacolada.com/bahiasal/bahia2.html

AND next to it is:
Punta Aguila Resort
http://www.puntaaguila.com/

Inexpensive, clean and pretty. The Bahia Salinas has an excellent restaurant (we ate there everyday and night), Punta Aguila are only efficiency apartments which means you can bring and cook your own food. (no microwave though...

Beach wise, there are on the water but not much of a beach. The water is about a foot high full of water plants, but great for kayaking and glowing waters at night. You'd need to go to Boqueron for the beach. There is also another beach about 5 minutes from both these places and that one is a nice crescent beach but I don't remember what it's called.

Just a quick comment about the last post. We drove past Parador Bahia Salinas on the way to Cabo Rojo lighthouse. It seems to be a nice establishment. But it is a little bit out of the way from the main road and major towns. And there are no resturants and stores nearby. It should be nice place for some relaxing time though. There is a beautiful beach by the bottom on the lighthouse which is about 10 minutes drive from there on a rough road, and the lighthouse itself is not to be missed.
