One night in St Thomas

We are looking to stay one night in St Thomas at the end of our vacation so we aren't rushing around the next morning for our flight back home. Right now we are considering the Marriot Frenchmans Reef or Wyndham Sugar Bay. Both seem close to the airport, and both are priced about the same.

Can someone please give me some feedback on these places. Is one better than the other? A good restaurant near by won't hurt.

Thank you for any help.

Hi ScottB: I haven't stayed at either place but you might consider what we know about each. Frenchmans Reef has an interesting set up where it goes down a cliffside and it has a restaurant with good reviews, Blue something or another. The Wyndham is the only AI on the island so it may have a different kind of vibe. Both have been updated regularly so I don't think the accomodations are so much different in quality. I think Frenchmans may also be a bit closer to the airport? IMO, I'd go with the Marriott.

Absolutely go with the Marriot. We have stayed there and it is nice. It does have a decent restaurant or is an easy cab ride to some really great places in Charlotte Amolie. It is also a lot closer to the airport and not as remote.

The Wyndham isn't at all close to the airport, and I"m not sure they'd allow a one-night stay (this is an AI resort).

For just one night, I'd stay at the Holiday Inn downtown so you could get to restaurants more easily. It's not on a beach, but I don't see that as a huge disadvantage.

If you want a beach, then you should stay at the Best Western Emerald Beach; it's the closest resort to the airport.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn for 1 night last summer before going to STJ. It was pretty creepy. We did not get one of the rooms that has been updated. There was about 2 inches of clearance under the door so I had nightmares of a big roach crawling in. I got up and stuffed a towel along the bottom of the door. Also had to make four trips to the front desk to get the key card re-keyed. Could not get into the room upon returning from dinner. Once the key worked, you had to hit the door like a linebacker to get it to open and unstick. Same thing happened the next morning and I had to make four trips back to the front desk because of the key. A maintenance guy finally had to help get us into the room. It was just my teenage daughters and I as my husband joined us later in the trip. It was a night to remember and laugh about to say the least. The front desk ladies were kind to me but seemed kind of rude to others.

Thanks all for the replies. I think we are going to go with Frenchman's Reef.

I can recommend the Hotel 1829 as an option. It sits in downtown Charlotte Amalie and walking distance to a great variety of shops and restaurants. It is priced reasonably, as well. You are 15 minutes to the airport.

Ditto Caribbeansoul's recommendation. Hotel 1829 also has an excellent restaurant as I remember. It's not on the water, but it may be a fun, different experience.
