New Years Eve in Eleuthera - what happens?

First timer here so please excuse my questions...

What happens New Years Eve on the Island?
I guess what I'm asking is do they have fireworks or anything you can see from the beach(es) - we'll be on Windermere Island.

We obviously won't be visiting any drinking spots as we have an 8 year old but this will be her first beach trip and first time to stay up on New Years, and wondered if it would be worth her time?

Thanks !

No there won't be anything for her to see. Do you know what you are getting into on Eleuthera? Just miles and miles of beach and not much else. Nothing to do other than have dinner. There may be a Junkanoo in Governours Harbour which would start around midnight. Junkanoo is a sort of VERY LOUD parade with costumes. The Junkanoo on Harbour Island is quite something.

You might read up on Eleuthera to make sure it is the kind of island you really want. There is very little in the way of tourist activities and that is the reason alot of visitors choose Eleuthera. I have spent a few weeks on island over the years renting a house right on the beach by myself and other than going to the store or out to dinner, never saw another person on the beach, had it all to myself.

Eleuthera is one of the least developed Bahamian islands, and is just being discovered. If you want to see any of the island you will have to have a car, but the island is VERY spread out so going to Govenours Harbour will take at least 45 minutes from Windemere Island.

You also might enjoy a day trip to Harbour Island, which will take you almost 2 hours to get to N. Eleuthera to the ferry dock to get a water taxi over to the island. Eleuthera is 110 miles long and there are few settelments in some areas of the island.

The beaches are why most people go to Eleuthera.

You might enjoy the website for local info on the island www.eleu.net.

Have a great time.

You may want to get reservations at Tippy's. Its the "most happening" restaurant in town. Great food also.

yes, we are totally aware of what's on Eleuthera - Windermere Island. That's one of the reasons why we're going, no tourists, just us on the beach and nature.

We have access to a car and we will tool around the island and we know about how far stuff is, we're going with folks who go every year and do absolutely nothing and love every minute !!

We have a day planned for Harbour Island and we also have a day planned with an adventure tour, other than that we're looking forward to sitting on the beach and vegging, snorkling, building sandcatles, listening to the waves crashing on the shore, and not much else !
Thanks Wantsomesun...... we're coming from -13 with 2 feet of snow so we don't really care right now !

Sounds like you are going to have a great time, and since you already know what to expect, you will be blown away by the beaches there.

Govenours Harbour is probably the closest place for shopping, for food and you might want to try some of the local bakeries in the area as well. There are also a few local food stands so try the conch salad.

Also for a fun night head to Mate&Jennys' in S. Palmetto point. Maitlin makes the BEST conch pizza and is a wonderful host.

Enjoy!!!
