Gallows Lower Harbor room or....

Hello everyone. I've been reading w/great interest all of your wonderful insight re: St. John. Husband & I are in the early planning stages for a 2007 anniversary trip.
We found the Estate Lindholm and thought this sounded like a perfect fit for us. But, then I visited the gallows website and see that we could get a lower harbor room for $225.00 a night. (We're on a bit of a budget, two sons in college & it's killing us ) We enjoy walking, especially into and around town. We will be renting a vehicle. This is our first trip to the Virgin Islands.
All opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Admittedly, I have not stayed at EL, but have checked out their website. If your budget will allow it, I would stay at Gallows Point. The ease of walking into town for shopping and dining can't be beat. You will hear the ferrys very early in the morning but it didn't bother us. We liked watching the activity of the harbor. Units 10 and 11 are the best harbor views as they are closest to the "point". You can request a certain unit if you desire. The pool area is nice and has a jacuzzi for those night caps under the stars.

Take a look at Sago cottage outside Coral Bay. It's listed under Calabash Cottages. Depending on when you plan to go, it may fall within your budget. Nice little studio with great views of the lower BVi chain.

Thanks Roberto. The Sago Cottage looks beautiful!
Nice hot tub, but my husband really wants a pool on property.
I appreciate your suggestion.

We like Gallows Point a lot and have been there 3 or 4 times. (We split our time between Caneel and Gallows.) Just be sure you understand that there's no beach at Gallows, just a small rocky shore. Nice snorkeling right out front-- not the best on the island, but not bad at all. What another poster said abt boat traffic noise may or may not be impt to you. We're very noise senistive and I'd not like being in one of the harbor rooms. The rooms way on the other side of the property would be somewhat more quiet.

We like Gallows also, however, our unit was next to ZoZo's a popular open air restaurant so we heard silverware clanging, laughter, singing till 10PM. Thankfully they do not serve breakfast or lunch. Just something to get use to.

Just back! Gallows Point was a very nice surprise. We had an oceanview room (7C). Rooms are big, clean and spacious. We had a view of the snorkeling beach. The pool although small was very nice an uncrowded. The best thing about Gallows Point was the location. We walked to town for breakfast and dinner at Rhumlines. I would stay there again.
P.S the villa part of our trip was the best though!

Travelbugs: thanks for posting, and I'm glad you had a good trip. Will you be reporting on your villa? I hope so. We keep hoping to find a villa-- with a king bed-- that's as convenient to town as Gallows and that has good snorkeling near by. We always split our time between Gallows and Caneel, but I'd prefer a villa if I can find one that suits.

poss, the villa we stayed at was Amani. It is not far from town but also not within walking distance. This was our third visit to St John and this villa was closer to town than some of the the other more remote villas that we have stayed at. The villa was a four bedroom with 4 bath villa with pool. The 4th bedroom was actually a little cottage that looked like a little studio apartment. The pool had wonderful views of the harbour and although the road to the villa was past the Westin, it seemed to be an easy drive. We would drive to the Starfish Market easily. The villa was very clean and spacious. Two of the bedrooms, not including the cottage had king beds. The third bedroom was upstairs which was wonderful if you are traveling with kids. It had 2 twin beds and its own bathroom. All of the bedrooms had AC. Villa Amani was a nice place to stay at. We would rent it again.
