Exuma or Abaco

First trip to out islands. Should it be Exuma or Abaco? My husband is a beach walker, want the best beach for this. Would prefer private property or resort with kitchen. HELP, Please!

We stayed on Lubbers Quarters in the Abacos, which I wouldn’t recommend if beach walking was a main priority. For that I would suggest either Great Guana or Elbow Cay. There is a large selection of rental properties on both islands.

A rental boat is great way to explore other cays and it is a very common method of transportation in the Abacos. It enables you to travel to any number of empty beaches in the Abaco sound.

Two excellent sources for planning an Abaco trip are the Abaco Board (http://coconuttelegraph.net/forums/ ) and Dr. Ralph’s site (http://www.drralph.net/index.html ) .

While I haven’t been to the Exumas you can’t go wrong between a trip there or the Abacos.

kimp; Been to both Abaco and Exuma. It's a toss up because the beacher are plentiful in both locales. RobertoB is right about Abaco. I stayed at Lubbers Quarters Cay this June/July doing more reef fish surveys, and the tiny island doesn't over lengthy beach walks. Great Guana Cay certainly does- on the Atlantic side you can walk for 6 miles on a relatively secluded beach. You could stay at Dolphin Beach Resort on Guana, which is on the Atlantic side close to the settlement. Or, you could stay on Guana Seaside Resort, which is on the northern section of Guana on the Sea Of Abaco. There, you could walk to Baker's Bay in low tide, before it is bulldozed into a private development and ruined. Now, however, Baker's Bay offers pristine beaches, totally secluded. For Guana Seaside Resort, you can easily walk to the Atlantic side in several minutes, and enjoy the 6 mile beach there; it's only about a thousand feet wide at that point (if that). Exuma has more lengthy beaches, which seem endless, compared to Great Abaco Island. We rented a car on Exuma and undeveloped, pristine and solatary beaches were virtually everywhere. Same with Eleuthera Island. Robert

Have you thought about maybe trying a resort or hotel on South Andros Island, Bahamas? There is a lot to do and it is a well kept secret if you ask me. Depending on your interests there is a local trip planner who is willing to work with you and basically do all the arranging if needed. It is nice because he is very responsive and knows the area and people very well. His site is prob. most informative, although it's basic. It is best to contact him and go from there. www.androsdiving.com
