MIM,
Sounds like either pronunciation will work out OK. At least I know more than before. When I first read about it last year when I was thinking about STJ, in my head I was reading am-a-lee. Will still probably be hard for me to get that out of my pea brain!
francot,
I wish we got the Travel Channel here! Our cable company doesn't offer it here. Seems like they have everything else but that one. I actually requested unit 10C because it is the harbor view that is closest to the ocean view rooms and it was recommended to me that it was a nice unit. Gallows has responded via e-mail that it is available. As long as the decor is decent and clean, we are not much bothered by that. I'm hoping for good pillows. That is one of my pet peaves. That said, I'm the one who takes her pillow on short driving trips. Nothing beats goose down IMHO. Not that I am expecting that. Not sure about all of the units being individually owned but heard that St John Suites handles some and Gallows the others. STJ Suites does not offer daily maid service and some other amenities.

Brenda,
From one pillow fanatic to another...pack your own
Down is easily re-plumpable and can be squished into carry on.
Never leave home without your pillow
Thanks for my smile of the day !

a-mall-ee, a-mall-ya, potato, potatoe, tomato, tomatoe! A-mall-ee works too....no worries, Brenda. I am glad you found 10C is available and I believe you will be more than happy with the furnishings. I also am very sure you'll find the pillows to be more to your liking. The lofted bed in 10C is a great bed! Any more info would be TMI.

CaribbeanSoul,
I put a lot of stock in your advice especially after we were so happy with our beachfront room at CCLP. I know that you would steer me in the direction of what we want. I had already chosen Gallows Point but it helped to know which units are nice with great views. That said, I am going to have to keep my eye out for the Brett and Julie were here signs! Did you leave one in the bedroom? Hee Hee

When our family traveled to the USVI for the first time five years ago, I too wanted to be sure I pronounced Charlotte Amalie correctly. After researching in a number of different sources, spending way too much time, I concluded with certainty that "Amalie" was pronounced Ah-mahl-ya, with the accent on the second syllable. (As I recall, it derives from the proper pronunciation of a royal historical figure.) But as soon as I arrived in STT, I heard one of the locals pronounce it Am-ah-lee, just how it looks, which surprised me to say the least! Ah-mahl-ya may be proper, but it sure isn't the only pronunciation on the island.

You must be talking about the "Be As You Are" CD by Kenny Chesney. My favorite one by him.I listen to it on my deck and dream about the islands.
BTW..My DH and I will be going to his concert this Saturday night.I cannot wait!

Brenda,
Have fun in St John..we cannot wait to go back for a week..just DH and I.
If you like to snorkel..make sure you go to Waterlemon Cay..we never made it there as we had our small kids with us.I have heard that the snorkeling is great there as is Trunk bay(on non cruise ship days),Caneel bay,Little Lameshur bay.The beaches were so calm when we went in June.

It's the funniest thing. Charlotte Amalie was a Danish Queen. The town was named after her. Now, if you are speaking to a Dane in English, they say a mal lee. In Danish it's not even a ma le ah. It's comes out like a meel. So, I guess the bastardization of it is
a mah le ah and the Americanization of it a mal lee. SO, both are acceptable.
As for Jost or Yost. The Jost Van Dyke people say Joss. Yost is commonly used and accepted, but it's Joss.
Hey, as long as you come and visit us, we are happy! Have fun!

This thread has been better than I would have ever thought. Even got a little history lesson. It has been interesting to hear the different pronunciations. I'm the dork sitting here pronouncing them all in my head. Sounds like we will get by however we say it. Good info on "Joss" as well. We are definitely going there. Plan one visit on New Horizons and one by ferry so we can spend a little more time there. I did take note that the ferry only runs Fri-Sat-Sun from STJ. Thanks everyone who contributed!
