charlotte amalie

How is this pronounced? Don't want to get to STT and sound like a dip you know what. I have heard a couple of different ways. For example, a-mall-ya and a-mall-lee. Kind of like the is it Jost or Yost Van Dyke question. For the latter I have read that either is fine. Thanks

Brenda

Actually, we are going to STJ the end of November. I recently booked it. Staying at Gallows Point. Very excited, but don't want to wish whats left of summer away.

Well, BrendeR,

I just don't know about Charlotte Amalie.

But I do know that I was finally, thoughtfully corrected about Nevis. There were no H's and R's to throw me off, but I didn't realize it was Neevis

So we should call you Mahion?? Thats a tricky one. Had to try to learn how to pronounce some of the Grenadine Islands before we did our day trip there last year too.

Yes it is a tricky one

My parents tried to name me Molly...but the priest said no.

So some of the family still call me Molly, which I always hated.

If we were to meet, you'd be welcome to call me Mar...which, of course, up heah is pronounced Mayah

Brenda - when I lived there most said a-mall-le, but I have heard it pronounced with a Y sound as well. I really would not worry, people pronounce it so many different ways... Have a great time!

I have been told it is as Caribbeansoul says: Charlotte A"mall"yah. And it is "Yost" Van Dyke, or as popular with the locals as just "Yost." Christie: have you looked at Gardenbythesea.com It also looks wonderful for a nice trip for two.

Brenda - again it depends on who you ask. I lived there for a long time, not many people pronounced it with the yah...

Brenandg - do you watch the "Travel Spies" on the travel channel? They went to USVI last week and went to Gallows Point. The one thing that they say is that all the units are personally owned and decorated. They suggested asking the resort to email pictures of the unit you are in and ask them to change it if you do not like the decor.
