Casa de Campos/ Punta Cana

I am just beginning to research a trip to the Dominican Republic in January of 2004 (I know it's a late start). I am reading a lot about Punta Cana. Has anyone heard of Casa de Campos? I can't find anything on this board regarding it, but it has also been recommended.

Also, what is the weather like in late January?

Thanks for your help!

Casa de Campo is supposed to be great if you golf. The beach is man made and very small. I don't think there is a lot to do if you have children. I have not been but some of the guys I work with went there for a conference a couple of years ago. I have been to Punta Cana and stayed at The Paradisus. I went with 4 other girls and (in our late 30's) and it was the most relaxing vacations I have ever had. There are not alot of excursions to do so we pretty much stayed at the hotel. The beaches are the best I have ever seen. The hotel was really nice even the food was good. I would go back in a second. I don't know what you are looking for but this hotel is really nice for the price.

Casa de Campo is considered one of the finest resorts in the Caribbean...period...It usually is in the best 10 or 20 in the world... and their golf course with the Leg of the Dog or whatever is a challenge.. The weather in January will be hot... CDC is in La Romana, not Punta Cana.... We were in Punta Cana last year.. and this year back to La Romana...check out.

ParrottMom,
First I want to say I always love reading your posts. I read alot before our trip to The Paradisus. I was just talking to one of the guys who went to the conference at Casa de Campo and he said the pool was great as were the buildings and landscaping. However, the beach is man made and very small. ParrottMom you have to admitt that the beach in Punta Cana is one of the nicest (I have to say that I liked the one infront of Paradisus the best). So,Parisinspring, good luck with your decision and let us know what you ended up doing.

We are heading to Sunscape Casa del Mar in La Romana where the beach is gorgeous..turquoise warm water and white sand..While in Punta Cana at the other suncape the water was not to my liking...on the murky side.. Have never been to the Paradisus...our other trip to Punta Cana was at the Catalonia..not my type beach, but the pool was lovely, but we had heard it had badly gone down hill and was dirty... Glad to hear I have a "fan club"... I believe in telling the truth...

We are going on a cruise and this is a port stop on the cruise for one day. There isn't much offered for excursions. Rafting, and horsebackriding on the beach. Have you seen any cruise ships there? Which out of the 2 would you recommend if any? Thanks.

Have not seen any of the cruise ships in the new port BUT cruisers tell me that there is a great show at Casa de Campo/Altos de Chavon called Kandela..done in a gorgeous ampitheatre which I do know about. As for the rafting they maybe talking about going down the Chavon river...and stopping for lunch. If you need more information on Kandella I have site.. You should also ask previous cruisers on whichever line your going.. This area of La Romana is not like any of the other usual cruise ports...it is still being developed and defintely a third world country, but the people are wonderful.

I was just back on the excusrion site and they have added this show which I didn't see last time I looked. Well this looks like something to consider attending. Yes I will be checking with other cruisers on what they did while at this Island. Many years ago I went on a cruise and we toured Santo Domingo and I think the cruise port was right in the main town. This port looks and sounds different to me. Thanks for your help.

Santo Domingo is too far from La Romana..and you'd spend most of your time on the bus. If you go to Kandella..bring something soft to sit on..the ampitheatre has stone seats.. The price I have is either $25.00 or $35.00 and the person who initially sent me info was on a cruise ship.. It is a musiscal review. He said that he ship does offer this excursion with transportation and frankly unless you go with a group taxi fares are very expensive in the D.R...very strong taxi union...their prices are outrageous.
