Bears - but I do not think you really need to be afraid - just show appropriate caution. NEVER run from a bear - slowly back away. Make lots of noise when hiking - that way you will not surprise them. When I was in Whistler I saw 2 bears - one near the town - we just went in the other direction and one up near the edge of the tree-line on the mountain - in both cases the bears just ignored us.

There are lots of bears in Whistler, but that shouldn't deter you from hiking. Just be bear aware. Whistler tourism has a booklet that tells you how to react. We see 10 to 20 bears a year, while hiking, golfing, and one even walked across our deck while we were in the hot tub. That will get your adrenaline going!! There are lots of great trails.
