summer hiking at whistler
I am planning a family vacation for Aug or sept. Have been to Glacier/Banff and Jasper. Is there enough hiking/fishing etc..around Whistler to make for a fun week? We are bringing our 2 y.o. son so hesitate to do extensive driving, need to rather stay put in one area. Have never been to west coast of Canada.

Lots of excellent hiking and with your experience no need to join any of the 'Guided Hikes' that are flogged so aggressively in the village (in $US!).
Fishing at that time however will be marginal-a long hot summer in the mountains will mean warm water in both lakes and streams and little if any action from sluggish trout.
If it's hiking & fishing both that you want then go to Tofino/Ulcluelet and take in some action with Saltwater Coho at that time-fabulous fishing and all kinds of hiking/beach walking opportunities.

There are lots of hiking trails around Whistler. you can even take the gondola to the top of the mountain, hike as long as you want and take the gondola back to the village. There are 4 lakes right in the village that have very good catch and release fishing for trout. You can drift down the River Of Golden Dreams in a rented canoe or take your son to any of the many parks and playgrounds. There are professional nanny/babysitting services, so you can enjoy the many restaurants and night spots, and all of this can be done without a car.You can get lots of information at www.whistler-blackcomb.com Cheers, Al

Sorry Sam, But I have to disagree. I live on Green lake, and the fishing at the mouth of Fitzsimmon's Creek, and where the River of Golden Dreams empties into the lake have good fishing all summer. By the sound of your name, I'd say you're just trying to promote your fishing business on the Island. ( and no, I don't own a fishing business in Whistler)

Not such luck Al-I'm a Vancouver resident who fishes both fresh & salt regularly and I have no particular area to promote-unlike some here
In fact I'll be heading up toward Whistler to fish the Cheakamus River for Rainbows in a few weeks for some of the best action of the year- a 40 fish day isn't uncommon.
However your depiction of "fishing at the mouth of Fitzsimmon's Creek" as "good fishing all summer" is generous at best. Some few bites before the sun crests the mountains is the best one can expect-I know the area well-it's underwhelming at that time of year-as as all tepid mountain lakes.
Another factor'lahotsos' should consider is the upcoming back country travel ban.
Yes it's coming sooner rather than later to an area near you-no one to be allowed in the back country for any reason starting late July if not sooner.
With snow pack at low volumes and long term precipitation forecast at below normal BC is in for another long hot summer with draconian water use restrictions.
If someone wishes to see 'the best of BC mountains' they should consider an early trip not a later one.
If 'lahotsos' wishes more BC fishing info/comment/opinion he should try the Forum on www.fishbc.com
