Need your help planning a weekend birthday visit to Montreal, in early October. So many hotels to choose from!

We like the looks of Le Germain (stayed at their sister hotel in QC, Dominion 1912, and loved it.) Also like Hotel Nelligan, Place d'Armes, Auberge du Vieux Port, and Napoleon.

Any recommendations, experiences, or pressing reasons to choose one over the other? Location? Services and prices are pretty similar...

We have stayed at Hotel Gault and The Nelligan. Both are very good choices. Both boutique hotel in nature. They are both in Old Montreal with The Nelligan being closer to "the action" but just by around 3 blocks.

I've recommended Hotel Saint Sulpice many times. It's a suite hotel in Old Montreal and we had a wonderful stay there.

We really enjoyed St. Sulpice, because of the location and the nice courtyard restaurant for dinner. Most rooms have small kitchenettes and windows that open to the street or the courtyard.

We also enjoyed Auberge Bonaparte. It is a nice hotel with a french restaurant that gets good reviews (we didn't eat dinner there). The room included breakfast, which was very tasty (better than St. Sulpice's in my opinion). It's not a trendy hotel, like Nelligan or others, but very comfortable and reasonably priced.

Auberge du Vieux Port was very nice! The staff is outstanding. The location is excellent. The breakfast was wonderful. We did not eat dinner there because there were so many other places to try out. My only complaint was that the sheets were softer than the pillowcases. (I am very picky about my pillow.)Seriously, I really would go back again in a heartbeat.

Does anyone know if the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is in a good location for a winter visit to Montreal? It's got some great rates and an indoor pool--which is always a good thing when traveling with kids--but I can't tell if it's close enough for easy access to things in winter temps.

Yes the QE is excellent because you have the underground access which runs for miles, as well as giving you direct access to the metro.

We also stayed there last week.(I couldn't choose between old and new montreal so we did both.) Unfortunately, the strike is still on (a month running) and management is doing all the housekeeping (rather poorly),and restaurants, spa, etc. all closed. Minibar in room not even serviceable!I cannot imagine it can go on much longer, but, quite a disappointment after staying in so many other fabulous Fairmonts. The location of the QE is enviable. We walked the entire city from there.

What strike? Just Fairmont or all downtown hotels? Do you mean all restaurants @ The Fairmont are closed?

Don't know any other hotels in Montreal. Just don't go to the downtown Econo Lodge. My experience was very disappointing. I read reviews about that hotel after I came back. There were quite a few customers who had similar disappointing experiences during their stay there.

This a strike by the hotel union and I saw pickets at the Sheraton as well. Someone from Montreal should be able to give better information that I can.(It seems like they are hitting the Fairmont the hardest. They had blocked the street to the entrance during the day and were blaring John Lennon over the pa system.) The restaurant was only open for breakfast. I guess the Beaver Club has been closed for awhile for renovations, but they are all closed now due to the strike.

why would anyone stay at the econolodge?? might as well sleep in your car.
