We'll be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in August and have chosen Montreal. It looks like Old Montreal in the port area is the best bet, but would appreciate suggestions. We were thinking of the Auberge du Vieux-Port, but I've read very good and very bad reviews of it on this site. Any suggestions? We really want this to be great, and have enjoyed romantic old inns in the past, as long as the creature comforts and amenities come with it.<BR>Any suggestions?<BR>Lois

I'm trying to imagine how someone could write a "very bad review" of the Auberge du Vieux Port.<BR><BR>We had a very nice room with a view of the port, great bathroom and friendly service. It's not the Ritz, but was plenty charming and comfortable. The only downside I can think of is that its location in Old Montreal is a little removed from the rest of the city, but that wasn't a big problem.

Lois,<BR><BR>I second Brian's comments re: Auberge du Vieux-Port. <BR>The property is charming and romantic. Concierge service is terrific. If you're having second thoughts, you may want to check out their newer property, Place d'Armes, located near Notre Dame. <BR>Our preference is Vieux-Port and we returned for a 5th stay in September.

The Auberge du Vieux-Port is owned by the people who also own Auberge Les Passants du Sans Soucy in Old Montreal. My wife and I honeymooned at Sans Soucy a few years ago. It is fantastic. Fodors itself says "This is one of the most romantic city hostelries you'll find anywhere" and I agree. Either would certainly be excellent choices.

It just happens that the latest issue (today) includes the hotel you are curious about.<BR><BR>BAK

Lois,<BR><BR>I would also take a look at Auberge Bonaparte, which is located right around the corner from Notre Dame. They have a website, but I can't remember the URL. Check out some of the rooms that overlook Notre Dame's secret garden. The adjacent restaurant by the same name is also wonderful and very romantic.

We tried Hotel Place d'Armes for our anniversary because Fodor's has it listed as a Fodor's Choice. It was perfect. We stayed in a King Deluxe Room with Double Jacuzzi as part of their Romatic getaway package and loved every second. Dinner was included at les Remparts and the food was delicious. This will definitely be a yearly visit for us.
