Hip, new Montreal restaurants?

My husband and I are traveling to Montreal in May. Are there any hot new restaurants we should try? Any cuisine at all ... And are there any reliable publications that have new restaurant reviews? Thanks!

Without doubt, the brightest star at the moment is Toque @ 3842 Rue St. Denis. The dishes are incredibly creative, the presentation unparalleled and the freshness of ingredients beyond reproach. Book early, you won't be disappointed!

I am a Montrealer and I have several suggestions.

Steak and Seafood: Gibbys or Moishes
Smoked Meat (Corned Beef): Schwartz's
Italian: Le Piedmontais
Chinese: Le Piement Rouge
French: Toque
If you go along St Laurent street or in the old Montreal core you are sure to find a restaurant that suits your needs.

The thing with Montreal is that there are so many good restaurants out there; I lived there for 5 years and with a friend of mine, we were determined to log the best restaurants in the city with the goal in mind of writing our own restaurant critic guide. An indomitable task really, as we kept discovering "new" places we liked that had been around for years and years. One reason this project would never really come into fruition is we found ourselves at select favorites more often than we dared new places.

And places can deteriorate; a certain Indian restaurant on Prince Arthur near Saint Laurent my friend and I loved...we were addicted to their chicken madras and their butter chicken, and brought guests there frequently. But lo and behold with time, their papadum got progressively greasier and with it, the quality of their meat seemed poorer as well.

All of this to say, I know you're asking about new restaurants (write of any that you find) but I'll bet there are tons of amazing old ones you've never been to. I've listed some of my favorites before, but here are a few more.

I loved Vaudeville on Bernard near Parc; amazing brunch place with a fresh basket of pastries to start. Yummm.

Byblos is a great Iranian place on Laurier East (little out of the way); their Dizi (sp?) is heavenly.

Olive & Gourmande in Old Montreal has amazing sandwiches and lunch salads.

Miriana's on Marie-Anne E. is a small restaurant that mostly delivers. Specialties from Sarajevo; delicious vegetable flake pies.

We tried Verses at Hôtel Nelligan. It's a great place if you are looking for a trendy restaurant. The food was excellent, but we preferred Remparts because it is quieter and more romantic.
