Last minute waffling about first night stay in Nova Scotia.

Ours is a party of four. We arrive around ten at night in Halifax and plan to set off for PEI in the morning. I have us booked into two rooms at the Cambridge Suites in Halifax. I just read a note about the Inn on the Lake which is nearer the airport. Does anyone have an opinion on it as an option for us? It costs about the same for a two bedroom suite as the each of our rooms at the Cambridge. Thanks.

The airport is some distance from town and the Cambridge Suites is right downtown. If you are leaving for PEI in the morning, the Inn on the Lake would be a much better choice.

You are only 20 minutes from downtown especially at that time of night. The Inn on the Lake is ok - older and smaller rooms. If you simply want a spot to hang your hat for the night, then go for it. Not like you will be spending anytime there. They do have a good on-site restaurant and it is on the highway, making getting out of the city a lot easier especially if on a weekday. The other option would be the Hilton Garden Inn which is a new spot located minutes from the airport. I stayed here recently and would highly recommend it.

If you are only looking for a place to sleep, the Halifax Airport Hotel is fine -- I stayed there last month, and its around 1 minutes from the airport, with free shuttle service. No need to drive south to Halifax just to head north the next day toward PEI. But, it may be better to drive an hour or so north (the highways are empty that time of night) to get to the ferry more quickly.

Well, I booked a suite at the Inn on the Lake and cancelled the Cambridge Suites for arrival night. If we love it, we will try to stay there our last night, but I kept open the reservation at Cambridge in case we don't. We will check out the two other airport hotels as well. The suite at the Inn on the Lake costs about $50CF more than a single room at Cambridge. As we needed two rooms at Cambridge it was a substantial savings.
The reservations clerk told me there is not a grocery store convenient to the hotel which would still be open at 10 or 11 at night. He suggested we grab dinner at Tim Horton's in the airport or buy some snack foods at an airport concessionaire. Any other suggestions, Fodorites?
