Is this area in Montreal safe?
Hi, looking at hotels - how is the area near metro Berry-UQAM (Rue Labelle), don't think we'll be out late, plan on taking bus 747 to the hotel and using the metro after that. There is also what looks like a park on Google map Place Emilie-Gamelin.

I've been in this area a few times - not the greatest part of the city, but reasonably safe. The park is a hangout for the homeless, and the spiked hair-leather jacket crowd. Not my first choice as an area to stay. On the plus side, if you walk a few blocks north, you are in the Plateau (nice), walk a few blocks west, and you are in the heart of the busy St. Catherine shopping/business area. A few blocks east is the gay village. The university of Quebec and the Place-des-Artes are very close by.

All in all Montreal is very safe - we've wandered the streets well into the night, never had a problem. Of course like any city some areas are safer than others. The area in question is a bit sketchy feeling late at night, but i wouldn't consider it dangerous.

I've never had any problem staying in this part of Montreal after several visits. In the summer, right around the corner on Ste. Catherine Street, there are no cars allowed for several blocks. There are some great inexpensive restaurants, many with outdoor seating.

Labelle looks like a back alley, not a street. For safety we walked out of the hotel through the parking lot on Berri, felt safer. I would not walk there at night.
The hotel itself is really nice for the price we paid on Expedia, big breakfast included. Our kitchenette had everything for 2 people.
About 2 blocks away the central metro, restaurants, food and liquor stores, pharmacy. Part of Sainte Catherine is walking only, and we were stopped for money only once in 2 days.
