Renting at the airport is a breeze with most companies having offices only steps away from the terminal.
We've rented with both National and Enterprise with good results. Some credit cards offer deals with other companies like Avis so check yours.

If you're going during Stampede, I'd reserve something asap.

I realize that this comes late for the original poster, but maybe it will help someone else: we saved beaucoup bucks by renting our car off airport (way off airport--it was at the Hertz on MacLeod Trail). It worked well for us b/c we were spending the first and last nights in Calgary. And then it turned out that we didn't have to pay any more for turning the car in at the airport in the end! (We ended up paying about $250 for a week for a compact by renting off airport, versus something like $440 for picking up at the airport. Could be that prices were just funky at the time we reserved, but also I think that there are extra charges at the airport that are not imposed if you rent in town.)

We are renting from Dollar--a full size car for $150/week. I found the rate on www.carrentals.com. I have always used Hotwire before but didn't think I would beat that rate. They are still offering the rate. Hope it works out.
