Where to leave the car

We will see Canada & upstate NY in a rental car for 3 weeks, but want to return the car and take a train into NYC from somewhere close by. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time.

Where can you drop the car? Where does the car rental company allow you to drop it? You could drop it at Newark or JFK.Most car rental companies are at these airports.

Most car rental companies have "in-town" locations plus the usual airport locations. However, we have sometimes found that if you rent at an airport, you must drop off at the airport, especially for one-way rentals (it sounds like that is what you are doing) Also, see recent post on taking rental car over boarder between US and Canada - never done it, but some seem to think it is a problem.

That said, we have often rented a car one-way, always airport to airport. Sometimes they charge drop-off fees, sometimes not, depending on rentability of cars at either end of trip. Since we are a family group, driver usually drops off passengers at in-town hotel and then returns car to airport, taking public transportation back to hotel.

Leave the car up in Stamford Connecticut or New Haven. Ask them to drive you to the train station.

You'll get a better rate on the car if you don't return it in New York.
